Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin claimed her record-equaling eighth World Cup slalom victory of the season on Sunday. She dominated the final race before the World Cup finals in Norway, finishing 0.94 seconds ahead of Germany’s Emma Aicher. Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener secured third place, one second off the pace.
Race Highlights and Shiffrin’s Reaction
Shiffrin expressed her emotions after the win: “That was really amazing. I was pretty nervous and excited, but it was challenging to ski. I pushed really hard and was quite happy to reach the finish.”
Aicher’s second-place finish marks her career-best result in slalom. The German has emerged as a strong challenger to Shiffrin’s pursuit of a record-equaling sixth overall World Cup title.
Overall Standings Update
With four events remaining—one race per discipline—Aicher trails Shiffrin by 140 points. Race wins award 100 points each. Shiffrin lost five points to Aicher in Saturday’s giant slalom, finishing fifth, but gained 20 points back with Sunday’s triumph.
Season and Career Milestones
Concentrating on slalom and giant slalom this season, plus two super-G starts, Shiffrin holds 1,286 total points, including 880 from slalom. She clinched her record ninth slalom globe in January, ahead of the Olympics.
Aicher has notched nine podiums across slalom, super-G, and downhill, with three speed event wins.
Shiffrin’s latest success matches her eight slaloms from the 2018-19 season—a feat previously achieved only by Croatia’s Janica Kostelic 25 years prior. Her career totals now include 72 slalom wins and 109 overall World Cup victories, both records.
