Tragic Collision Claims Young Life as Driver Sentenced

Shocking footage captures the moment a car surged to 80mph moments before fatally striking a 15-year-old e-scooter rider. The devastating collision, which propelled the teenager an estimated 90 feet, has resulted in the driver being sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for dangerous driving.

On the evening of July 8, 2023, Cameron Langley-McColm was operating a white BMW Sport on Heath Road in Coxheath, Kent, when his vehicle collided with Kieran Aaron Byrne, who was riding an e-scooter. Kent Police confirmed the incident. Langley-McColm initially contended that Kieran had swerved into his path while attempting to overtake. However, a thorough police investigation disproved this claim, establishing that the victim had consistently remained in the correct lane.

Investigation Reveals Reckless Speed and False Claims

Authorities stated that the impact sent the teenager approximately 28 meters from the point of collision. Emergency services, including paramedics, responded to the scene, but Kieran was tragically pronounced dead at the location. A second boy, aged 14 at the time, was also grazed by the speeding vehicle but sustained no serious injuries.

Initial roadside tests for intoxication and drug use administered to Langley-McColm at the scene yielded negative results, and he was released pending further investigation. During a voluntary interview on July 16, 2023, he reiterated his assertion that Kieran had veered in front of him. However, investigators from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, utilizing CCTV footage and witness testimonies, definitively established that the 23-year-old driver was exceeding the speed limit immediately prior to the crash.

Analysis showed Langley-McColm was traveling at nearly three times the 30mph speed limit and on the wrong side of the road. Crucially, the investigation also confirmed that Kieran and the other boy had been proceeding on the right-hand side of the road and had not made any sudden movements into the path of the oncoming car.

Sentencing and Family’s Grief

On January 13 of this year, Langley-McColm, residing in Maidstone, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He was subsequently sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court to seven years and six months imprisonment and received an 11-year driving ban.

Detective Constable David Holmes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, described the death as “tragic and completely avoidable.” He added, “Cameron Langley-McColm was driving at more than 82mph in a 30mph zone and had no consideration for other road users. His actions were reckless and unnecessary. As a result, a young boy lost his life and a family has been left devastated. Driving at speed increases the risk of death or serious injury, and we will continue to crack down on motorists who endanger others.”

Kieran Aaron Byrne was remembered by his family as a “beautiful” and “talented” schoolboy. In the aftermath of the tragedy, his sister-in-law, Rachel Byrne, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. She wrote, “On July 8, my beautiful, talented, hilariously sarcastic, clever, highly intelligent and funny 15-year-old brother-in-law passed away in an unfortunate road traffic accident. We have had the most horrific 48 hours that no family should ever have to deal with… I ask you kindly to remember, that last night my mother in-law lost her baby boy, as did his father, my husband lost his baby brother, my brother in-law lost his little brother and best friend, my step children lost their uncle and best friend. We as a family unite and are strong and will stick together whilst we deal with this tragic turn of events.”

The family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support, stating, “We thank you for all your flowers and love we have received, you do not understand how it has helped us. Kieran Aaron Byrne we will miss you and love you always. Fly high our angel.”

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit attended the incident, which occurred on Heath Road near Maidstone, Kent, around 10 p.m. on July 8. The road remained closed for over 10 hours as investigators processed the scene.
