Big Bang Theory’s Stuart Bloom: From Comic Shop Owner to Accidental Hero

Stuart Bloom, the perpetually down-on-his-luck owner of the comic book store in The Big Bang Theory, is stepping into the spotlight in a new HBO Max series, Stuart Fails to Save The Universe. This unexpected turn sees the character, previously known for his meek demeanor and romantic struggles, thrust into a universe-saving adventure. Actor Kevin Sussman, who reprises his role as Stuart, revealed in an interview that the character’s trajectory was far from the original plan.

Stuart’s Evolving Role in The Big Bang Theory

When Stuart Bloom first appeared in The Big Bang Theory, his character was conceived as a more conventional figure. Sussman explained that Stuart was initially intended as a “straight man,” a charming individual with a business who posed a potential romantic rival to Leonard for Penny’s affections. However, as the sitcom progressed, the character’s narrative arc took a different direction.

“Over the years, the character sort of devolved and his world unravels,” Sussman noted. He described Stuart’s deteriorating circumstances as a counterbalance to the main characters’ evolving careers and relationships. This included the ongoing struggle of his comic book store, a storyline that mirrored the real-world challenges faced by such businesses due to the rise of digital media.

Sussman, who has personal experience working in a comic book store, found this aspect of the character particularly resonant. The series finale offered a glimmer of hope for Stuart, as he finally found a stable relationship with Denise. Sussman humorously remarked that the show’s abrupt ending, just as things were looking up for Stuart, felt “super exciting” and perfectly in character for the often-unlucky Bloom.

A New Universe, A New Hero?

Stuart Fails to Save The Universe picks up where The Big Bang Theory left off, exploring Stuart’s life with Denise and introducing a high-stakes plot. Following an accident involving a quantum machine built by Leonard and Sheldon, Stuart finds himself as the unlikely individual tasked with saving the universe. Despite the cosmic threat, his primary concern remains his connection with Denise, highlighting the genuine importance of this relationship for the formerly lonely character.

Sussman pointed out that the new series, filmed with a cinematic approach, allows for deeper development of Stuart and Denise’s relationship than was possible on the original sitcom. This fresh dynamic offers an exciting evolution for the character, providing a new platform for his personal growth.

The Unexpected Journey to a Leading Role

For Kevin Sussman, starring in Stuart Fails to Save The Universe marks a significant career milestone. While a familiar face from roles in shows like Ugly Betty and Weeds, this is his first time headlining a series. The project’s development was a closely guarded secret, with Sussman keeping it under wraps for two years before its official announcement.

Sussman recounted how show creator Chuck Lorre approached him during the pandemic with the concept for the spin-off. Initially, Sussman speculated about guest-starring on Young Sheldon or even playing a different character, given the unusual circumstances. The pitch for a surreal spin-off centered on Stuart, traversing parallel universes, was unexpected.

“I said, ‘yes okay yes I would like that’ and he said ‘okay don’t tell anyone, because it’s so early on in development that you know… Big Bang Theory was such a big deal that if word gets out we’re working on a spinoff this early too much scrutiny this early on can’t be good for the project’,” Sussman recalled. He adhered to Lorre’s request, refraining from informing his agent or manager.

The development process was lengthy, with periods of silence that led Sussman to question if the meeting had been a “weird COVID dream.” The official announcement of a spin-off came in 2023, and it wasn’t until October 2024 that it was confirmed to focus specifically on Stuart, with recurring characters like Bert, Kripke, and Denise joining him.

A Multiverse of Stuarts

Adding another layer of complexity, Sussman clarified that the Stuart featured in the new series is not precisely the same character from The Big Bang Theory. Due to the multiverse concept, the show primarily follows a Stuart from a parallel universe who has survived an apocalypse, making him “slightly more badass.” While the original Big Bang Theory Stuart does make an appearance, the narrative centers on this more resilient version.

“He’s a reluctant hero, but he’s definitely pushed into a leadership position, which is something that never happened to Stuart of yesteryear,” Sussman observed. This new dynamic, where Stuart leads rather than merely participates, offers a fresh and intriguing exploration of the character.

Stuart Fails to Save The Universe is set to premiere on HBO Max on Friday, July 24, 2026.
