Sydney FC forward Apostolos Stamatelopoulos remains confident despite not scoring in the A-League since his loan arrival from Motherwell in February.
Patience Key for Striker Ahead of Melbourne Victory Clash
The 26-year-old striker prepares for his fifth appearance with the Sky Blues in the upcoming Big Blue match against Melbourne Victory at Allianz Stadium on Saturday. Stamatelopoulos emphasizes patience as crucial to breaking his goal drought.
“I wouldn’t say I’m worried,” he states. “The boys know if they give me good service, I’ll eventually put one or two chances away.”
He expresses enthusiasm for the club: “I’m really enjoying my time at the club. We play an attacking style of football and work hard for one another.”
Stamatelopoulos anticipates a vibrant atmosphere: “I can’t wait for the Victory game. It marks the 20th anniversary of the Cove, so they will be out in force. These are the games you want to play in.”
Return to A-League for More Game Time
Stamatelopoulos returned from the Scottish Premiership primarily for regular playing opportunities after an injury limited his starts at Motherwell.
“Purely for game time,” he explains. “I copped a knock and couldn’t get a look in when it came to starting games regularly. They were good enough to send me out on loan, so I jumped at the chance to come home.”
Born in Adelaide, his career includes stints with Adelaide United in 2017, Western United, clubs in Greece (Rodos and PAS Giannina), and a return to Newcastle Jets in 2023, where he scored 17 goals in 25 matches before moving to Scotland.
Future Options and Family Focus
Sydney FC holds an option to make the loan permanent. Stamatelopoulos notes his family’s stability: “My wife and I are settled, and we have a baby on the way in June, so I guess we will just wait and see.”
His immediate priority centers on consistent appearances for Sydney FC heading into the finals, rather than Socceroos World Cup selection under coach Tony Popovic.
Meanwhile, Spanish football legend Juan Mata continues to shine in the competition after switching from Western Sydney Wanderers to Melbourne Victory.
Kick-off for the match is at 7:35pm AEDT, with tickets available online.
