Tasmanian Excellence Celebrated at National Awards

The 2026 National Seafood Industry Awards saw Tasmanian entities emerge as leaders across various categories, highlighting the depth and quality of the state’s marine industries. Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, extended his congratulations to the award recipients and finalists, emphasizing the core values that define Tasmania’s seafood offerings.

“These awards are a testament to the innovation, sustainability, and professionalism that have become hallmarks of Tasmania’s seafood industry,” Minister Pearce stated. “The success achieved across research, environmental stewardship, workforce development, and seafood tourism demonstrates the extensive expertise and excellence present throughout our sector.”

Key Tasmanian Award Winners and Contributions

Several Tasmanian initiatives and individuals received national awards, showcasing specific areas of outstanding achievement:

  • Research, Development and Extension Award: Associate Professor Alison Turnbull and her collaborative team were honored for their significant scientific leadership. Their work was instrumental in supporting the successful reopening of Australia’s live lobster exports to China.
  • Environment Award: The Giant Kelp Restoration Project, a joint effort between the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and the Tasmanian Commercial Divers Association, received national recognition. This award acknowledges their crucial work in marine environmental conservation.
  • People and Development Award: Women in Seafood Australasia’s Turn the Tide Program was celebrated for its impact on workforce development and inclusivity within the industry.
  • Seafood Experience Award (Joint National Winner): Tasmanian Wild Seafood Adventures was recognized for offering unique and world-class visitor experiences, highlighting the appeal of Tasmania’s seafood tourism offerings.

Industry Leadership and Hall of Fame Induction

Beyond organizational achievements, the awards also recognized individual contributions to the seafood industry. Stuart Richey AM was named Joint National Industry Ambassador and was inducted into the 2026 Seafood Industry Hall of Fame, acknowledging his extensive career and impact.

Minister Pearce commented on Mr. Richey’s induction, stating, “Stuart’s contribution to Australia’s seafood industry over more than four decades has been extraordinary. His leadership has helped shape fisheries policy, seafood exports, marine safety, and industry development, and this recognition is richly deserved.”

Broader Impact and Government Support

The strong showing of Tasmanian finalists, including Mures Tasmania, Mures Upper Deck, Jock Mure, and Brendon ‘Squizzy’ Taylor, further underscored the state’s reputation for producing premium seafood. Minister Pearce noted that both winners and finalists play a vital role in showcasing Tasmania’s commitment to quality, innovation, and environmental care.

“Whether recognised as winners or finalists, each nominee has helped showcase Tasmania’s reputation for producing premium seafood, embracing innovation and caring for our marine environment,” he said.

The Tasmanian Government’s commitment to the sector was reiterated, with Minister Pearce referencing the “2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.” This plan aims to continue supporting a sustainable and prosperous seafood industry, which is crucial for regional communities, job creation, and the state’s overall economic value.

Conclusion: A Seafood Powerhouse

The national awards serve as a significant affirmation of Tasmania’s status as a leading seafood producer and innovator in Australia. The collective achievements of its businesses, researchers, and individuals highlight a dedication to excellence that drives the industry forward, reinforcing its importance to both the state and the national economy. The recognition received at the 2026 National Seafood Industry Awards celebrates the hard work and commitment of all Tasmanians involved in the marine sector.
