A 65-year-old former teacher, Deborah Franklin, has been found guilty by a jury of eight counts of gross indecency with a boy under the age of 14. The offenses occurred between 1991 and 1995 when Franklin was a private tutor and teacher at an independent preparatory school in Hertfordshire. She faces a potential prison sentence after the conviction, which was based on the detailed testimony of the victim, now in his 40s.
Teacher Convicted of Child Abuse Charges
The jury unanimously convicted Franklin after deliberating for three hours. The case against her relied heavily on the account of the former pupil, who stated that Franklin groomed and sexually abused him over several years. The victim, who was nine years old when he first encountered Franklin as his private tutor, described a relationship that evolved from a strong friendship into repeated sexual activity. His account was corroborated by his elder siblings and a school friend.
Franklin, who had worked as a teacher and home tutor, was charged under the Indecency with Children Act 1960. The maximum sentence at the time of the offenses was two years per count, but the law was later amended in 1997 to increase the maximum sentence to 10 years.
