A Tragic End to an Online Romance
A 19-year-old woman from Canada met a gruesome fate after traveling across the Atlantic to meet her online boyfriend, who stabbed her 90 times in a brutal attack. The incident unfolded in Essex, England, on February 1, 2022, when authorities arrested the suspect while he was on a video call displaying the victim’s body to a family member.
From Facebook Friends to Fatal Obsession
Ashley Wadsworth first connected with Jack Sepple on Facebook at age 12, while he was 15. Their initial friendship evolved over years into a romantic relationship, filled with messages like, ‘I just miss you so much, Jack. I love you so much. I miss you.’ Ashley, a devoted Mormon, dreamed of visiting Sepple in England, but her parents delayed the trip as long as possible.
Ashley’s mother, Christy Gendron, explained that the pair started as friends discussing life in Britain and Canada. The family initially supported the connection, with Christy greeting Sepple warmly and enjoying his accent. However, she repeatedly cautioned her daughter against getting too attached due to the distance. Unbeknownst to the family, Sepple had a history of convictions, including harassment, breaching a restraining order after an ex ended their online relationship, and assaulting his own mother.
The Journey Across the Ocean
By age 19, Ashley insisted on making the 4,000-mile trip despite her father Ken’s initial opposition. After she declared, ‘Well, I’m gonna go, no matter what, so you’re either with me or against me,’ Ken relented and encouraged her to save for the journey. Before departure, Christy urged Sepple to protect her daughter, saying, ‘Jack, I’m sending you my baby, so please take care of her. I’m trusting you with her.’ Sepple promised to ‘guard Ashley with his life.’
The adventure started promisingly, with Ashley telling her mother about their strong connection. But tensions arose when Ashley considered cutting the trip short. Her sister Hailey noted that Sepple failed to take her out or show affection, leaving them confined to his flat in Chelmsford. ‘He didn’t take her out for dinner. He didn’t buy her flowers. He didn’t buy her anything,’ Hailey recalled. Ken suspected a controlling dynamic, as the couple rarely ventured out.
Escalating Abuse and a Desperate Plea
The situation worsened over Christmas when Sepple was hospitalized following an apparent drug overdose. Upon his release after New Year’s, his behavior turned more controlling and violent. Ashley confided in Hailey that Sepple had struck her with a glass cup and thrown their kitten against a wall. ‘It was so awful. I spent two weeks begging her to come home,’ Hailey said.
On the day of her death, Ashley sought help from neighbor Helen Burtenshaw, arriving barefoot with a cut hand and a smashed phone. ‘Jack’s just beaten me up,’ she told Helen, who offered to call police. Ashley hesitated but agreed to return home after a required COVID test. That evening, Hailey’s attempts to reach her sister failed, prompting a welfare check by Essex Police.
The Discovery and Confession
Officers forced entry into Sepple’s home after detecting movement inside with no response. They found Sepple on his bed next to Ashley’s body in a bedroom covered in blood. Detective Superintendent Scott Egerton described the scene as ‘truly gruesome.’ When questioned, Sepple chillingly replied, ‘I went psychotic. I’m sorry,’ admitting he had strangled and then stabbed her.
Trial and Life Sentence
Sepple stood trial at Chelmsford Crown Court in October 2022. Judge Mr. Justice Murray labeled him ‘a dangerous individual’ and the attack ‘brutal and cowardly.’ He received a life sentence with a minimum of 23 years and six months before parole eligibility.
