Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem has granted an electricity supply license to Tesla Energy Ventures Limited, a Tesla subsidiary. This approval enables the company to deliver power to households and businesses throughout the country.
Launch Similar to US Model
Tesla Energy Ventures plans to introduce a service akin to Tesla Electric, which launched in Texas in 2022. The license became effective this week following a comprehensive assessment that spanned from July 2025 to March 2026.
The Gas and Electricity Markets Authority formally endorsed the decision. This supply license operates independently of an existing generation license held by Tesla Motors Limited.
Entry into Retail Energy Sector
The approval positions Tesla Energy Ventures to compete in the UK’s retail energy market, complementing its expanding lineup of battery storage, solar panels, and energy management solutions. Based in Manchester, the subsidiary first submitted its application last summer, with Andrew Payne, head of Tesla’s European energy operations, signing the documents.
Tesla already markets home batteries, EV chargers, and solar technology in Britain, building a solid customer foundation.
Regulatory Safeguards and Oversight
Ofgem mandates that Tesla Energy Ventures uphold consumer protections, fair customer treatment, financial accountability, transparent billing, and robust operations. The regulator will oversee compliance and can enforce measures under the Electricity Act 1989 and standard license conditions, such as directives, penalties, or license modifications.
This milestone supports Tesla’s strategy to grow its energy division alongside electric vehicle production.
