Singer Troye Sivan has voiced his perspective on the music industry’s differing treatment of artists, suggesting that male artists who are heterosexual often face fewer challenges compared to queer and female musicians. Speaking on the podcast Las Culturistas with hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, Sivan elaborated on how straight male artists seem to bypass what he termed the “Khia Asylum.”

“I think the whole Khia Asylum thing doesn’t get said about boys that much,” Sivan stated. “I think it’s a spectrum of how much people nitpick at you and pop girls have it really bad.” He noted that artists such as Bebe Rexha, Ava Max, Rita Ora, and Zara Larsson have been associated with this concept, although Larsson has seen a resurgence in her career following the success of her single ‘Midnight Sun’.

Sivan further explained his observation that straight male artists often receive less intense public scrutiny. “The straight boys might talk shit about you online, but either they don’t care or they don’t get it as bad,” he remarked. “I do think that straight boys can get away with releasing stuff that, if a queer artist or a female artist released, they would get ripped to shreds.”
He described the pressures on female artists as particularly intense, highlighting what he called “insane” expectations for them to continually reinvent themselves to maintain success. As a gay man, Sivan feels positioned “between the two,” experiencing a unique set of industry pressures that differ from both straight men and women.

Earlier in August, he released the album’s lead single and title track, ‘She’s the Best’.
