WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. commerce deficit fell by almost 24% in August as President Donald Trump’s sweeping world tariffs pushed imports decrease.

In a report delayed for greater than seven weeks by the federal authorities shutdown, the Commerce Division stated Wednesday that the the hole between what the US buys from different international locations and what it sells them fell to $59.6 billion in August, from $78.2 billion in July.

Imports of products and providers dropped 5% to $340.4 billion in August from July when U.S. corporations have been stocking up on overseas merchandise earlier than Trump finalized taxes on merchandise from virtually each nation on earth. These levies went into impact Aug. 7.

U.S. exports blipped up 0.1% in August to $280.8 billion.

Trump, charging that America’s persistent commerce deficits imply that different international locations have taken benefit of the U.S., has overturned many years of U.S. coverage in favor of free commerce, slapping double-digit tariffs on imports from most international locations and focusing on particular merchandise, together with metal, copper and autos, with their very own levies.

Nonetheless, the U.S. commerce deficit is up up to now in 2025, coming in at $713.6 billion via August, up 25% from $571.1 billion in January-August 2024.

A drop in imports and the commerce deficit is nice for financial progress as a result of overseas merchandise are subtracted from the nation’s gross home product. GDP is the output of a nation’s items and providers.

“August’s smaller commerce deficit will probably be a tailwind for third quarter actual GDP, because it signifies that extra U.S. expenditures have been directed towards domestically-produced items and providers somewhat than overseas ones,” Invoice Adams, chief economist at Comerica Financial institution, wrote in a commentary. “Whereas this launch is sort of dated due to the federal government shutdown, it contributes to proof that the financial system was rising briskly within the third quarter.”

Tariffs, which Trump says will shield U.S. industries and lure factories to America, are paid by importers who usually try and move alongside the upper value to their clients. Economists say Trump’s tariffs are one purpose U.S. inflation stays stubbornly above the Federal Reserve’s 2% goal.

After voters’ dissatisfaction with the excessive value of dwelling led to huge Democratic good points within the Nov. 4 elections, the president relented and dropped tariffs final week on beef, espresso, tea, fruit juice, cocoa, spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and sure fertilizers, saying they “could, in some circumstances” have contributed to increased costs.

In a Nov. 5, listening to, the justices sounded skeptical that the president had the authority to bypass Congress and slap limitless tariffs on most imports just by declaring a nationwide emergency.
