Fetterman advised “CBS Night Information” anchor Tony Dokoupil on Friday that “it isn’t an absurd concept” for the U.S. to purchase Greenland from Denmark, given its strategic significance. Previously, McCormick has floated each a “voluntary buy” of Greenland and deeper U.S. ties to the island as potential choices, whereas Fetterman has mentioned: “Ideally, we buy it.”

Mr. Trump has floated a U.S. takeover of Greenland for months, pointing to the territory’s strategically useful location. His administration has not dominated out taking the island by navy power, and on Friday, Mr. Trump threatened to hike tariffs on any international locations that do not “associate with” his push to annex Greenland.

The gambit has drawn robust pushback from officers in each Greenland and Denmark, which controls the island as a semi-autonomous territory. 

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen mentioned earlier this week that “we select Denmark” over the U.S., and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has mentioned a U.S. takeover would successfully imply the top of NATO, given Denmark’s membership within the alliance.

Danish International Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen met together with his Greenlandic counterpart and Trump administration officers on the White Home on Wednesday, in what Rasmussen described as a bid to “take down the temperature.” After the assembly, Rasmussen mentioned the U.S. and Denmark have “elementary” variations on Greenland however agreed to maintain speaking.

Rasmussen mentioned he is “keen” to work on safety enhancements in Greenland — which presently hosts a U.S. navy base — however an American takeover is “completely not essential.”
