Prominent Commentators Denied UK Entry Hours Before Festival
Two well-known political commentators, Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker, have been barred from entering the United Kingdom, with the decision reportedly made just hours before the SXSW festival was set to begin in London. Both individuals took to social media to announce the cancellation of their travel authorizations.
Criticism of Israel Cited as Reason for Ban
Hasan Piker shared on X, formerly Twitter, that his visa had been revoked, stating, “All at the behest of Israel. The West is betraying ‘liberal values’ for a genocidal fascist foreign government.” He added, “Soon we will all become Israel.”
Cenk Uygur also confirmed his exclusion from the UK, writing, “I’ve been banned from the UK. I tried to get on a flight to London to attend SXSW London and give a speech at Oxford. I’ve been banned for criticising Israel. Are we free anymore? This is oppression of Western citizens by our own governments on behalf of a different country!”
Home Office Cites Public Good Concerns
A spokesperson for the Home Office stated that the Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs) for both individuals had been canceled. The justification provided was that their “presence in the UK may not be conducive to the public good.” The department further elaborated that decisions to refuse or cancel an ETA on these grounds are “based solely on an assessment of the potential risk an individual may pose to UK society.” The spokesperson also noted that individuals whose applications require further consideration may choose to apply for a visa if they still wish to travel to the UK.
Past Controversies and Statements
Piker has faced scrutiny for past statements, including reportedly saying in a 2019 livestream that “America deserved 9/11,” for which he later apologized, calling the remark inappropriate. The streamer, who boasts millions of subscribers, also previously stated he would “vote for Hamas over Israel every single time.” He later clarified his stance, asserting he is “anti-Israel” rather than antisemitic.
Uygur, a recognized political commentator, has made numerous appearances on UK television. Concerns regarding his past statements, including allegations that Israel controls America through financial means and his dismissal of evidence related to grooming gangs, were reportedly raised prior to his travel ban, according to The Times.
SXSW Festival’s Stance
SXSW organizers stated that their event features a “wide range of speakers with different associations, affiliations and perspectives.” They emphasized that the festival does not endorse the organizations with which speakers are affiliated or support.
Precedent for Entry Bans
This incident follows previous instances where individuals have been denied entry to the UK. Notably, a US-based influencer was previously banned from entering the UK to speak at a rally after controversial actions, including burning a copy of the Quran. The Home Secretary intervened in that case, citing that the individual’s presence would not be conducive to the public good. A similar justification was used for blocking rapper Kanye West from entering the country earlier this month.
