An abandoned aircraft hangar in Oxfordshire undergoes a £4 million transformation into the UK’s first automotive resort. Located within the 444-acre Bicester Motion site, a former RAF base, Hangar 137 at Bicester Heritage on Buckingham Road becomes a major indoor leisure hub.
Key Features of the Development
The revamped 31,000 sq ft structure houses a two-storey electric karting venue with a 500-metre circuit spanning both levels. A mezzanine level above the track includes a bowling zone, workshop spaces, and spectator viewing areas. Developers envision this as part of a broader car culture and motorsport destination, surrounded by automotive and mobility industry companies.
Cherwell District Council approved the plans in January, and operator TeamSport now holds the keys to begin interior work. The project adds 40 new parking spaces and revitalizes the historic building for modern use.
Preserving Heritage While Embracing Innovation
Built in 1926 as a Type A hangar for the Royal Air Force between the World Wars, the structure gains new life without losing its historical value. Bicester Motion, home to over 50 firms in automotive, aviation, engineering, and mobility sectors, drives this regeneration strategy.
Daniel Geoghegan, CEO of Bicester Motion, highlights the milestone: “The practical completion of Hangar 137 in its centenary year marks a significant achievement for the estate and demonstrates heritage regeneration’s potential. This 1926 Type A hangar arose during a pivotal era in Britain’s aviation history. Our duty involves safeguarding its importance while enabling sustainable modern commercial activity.”
Community and Economic Benefits
Gavin Adair, CEO of TeamSport, es enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to secure the keys to Hangar 137 and launch our venture at Bicester Motion. Work starts now to convert this remarkable historic hangar into an exciting two-level indoor e-karting and entertainment center for the entire community.”
The council’s decision notes economic gains through job creation and social advantages via leisure options, ensuring the building’s long-term viability with substantial improvements.
