Cybersecurity AI Model Mythos 5 Gets Government Nod for Redeployment
Anthropic has announced that it has received authorization from the U.S. government to redeploy its advanced cybersecurity artificial intelligence model, Mythos 5. This comes after the company had previously suspended all access to both Mythos and its public-facing counterpart, Fable, following a directive from U.S. authorities.
The company stated that Mythos 5 will be made available to a select group of U.S. organizations responsible for operating and defending critical infrastructure. While the exact number of entities regaining access has not been disclosed, reports suggest that permission has been granted for the model’s deployment to over 100 institutions within the United States, encompassing major corporations and government agencies.
Anthropic is reportedly moving swiftly to reinstate access to Mythos 5 and is actively engaging with the government to broaden its availability further. Discussions are also underway regarding the potential reintroduction of Fable 5, though a specific timeline for this has not been provided.
Background of the Suspension
On June 12, Anthropic blocked all customer access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5, a model designed to offer many of Mythos’s capabilities to the general public. At the time, the company explained that the government’s directive involved suspending access for foreign nationals, even if they were physically located in the U.S. and employed by Anthropic.
The government’s action is understood to have been prompted by warnings from Amazon and other entities concerning the potential for these models to be “jailbroken” and exploited by malicious actors. U.S. officials also reportedly expressed concerns about a possible connection between a China-linked group and unauthorized access to Mythos 5.
Government Reassurance and Safeguards
According to correspondence, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick communicated the decision to Anthropic, stating, “I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model.” He further noted Anthropic’s commitment to collaborating with the U.S. government on protocols, standards, and future releases of its AI models.
Lutnick’s letter also highlighted Anthropic’s significant efforts to facilitate the lifting of the suspension. Over the preceding two weeks, the company engaged in daily consultations with the government to achieve this outcome.
Anthropic shared on social media, “Since June 12, we’ve been working closely with the US government to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical…”
