Stephen Warnock, a former Liverpool defender, claims Gerard Houllier blocked his dream return to Anfield while managing Aston Villa, despite the player’s offer to halve his wages.
Career Beginnings at Liverpool
Warnock began his professional career at Liverpool, making 67 first-team appearances before leaving in 2007. After a spell at Blackburn Rovers, he joined Aston Villa, where Houllier served as manager until stepping down at the end of the 2010/11 season due to health issues.
Falling Out and Transfer Bid
A disagreement with Houllier led to Warnock being demoted to the reserve squad. Sources indicate Gary McAllister, then assisting at Villa, informed Warnock that Kenny Dalglish wanted to bring him back to Liverpool initially on loan, with potential for a permanent deal.
Warnock expressed enthusiasm for the move. He later stated: “Gary McAllister came to me and said, ‘Kenny Dalglish has been on the phone. He wants to re-sign you for Liverpool.’ It was at least on loan to start with, with a view to a permanent.”
Alleged Jealousy and Deal Collapse
The transfer collapsed when Villa suddenly demanded a £500,000 loan fee. Warnock believes Houllier’s jealousy played a role, as he said: “There was an element of Gerard Houllier being jealous of the fact that I could go and play for Liverpool and be happy. It’s a bad look.”
Warnock offered to cut his wages in half to make the deal viable, noting: “When I was supposed to be going back to Liverpool, I said to them, ‘Chop my wages in half. I’ll take less. I don’t care. Just let me go back and play.'” Villa refused, and Warnock remained in the reserves for the season, growing increasingly frustrated.
Later Career Path
Under Houllier’s successor, Alex McLeish, Warnock returned to the first team and stayed at Villa for another season. He then moved on loan to Bolton Wanderers, joined Leeds United permanently, and later played for Derby County, Wigan Athletic, Burton Albion, and Bradford City before retiring in 2018 and becoming a pundit.
