Windows 11’s latest March update, identified as KB5079473, disrupts sign-ins for several apps that rely on Microsoft accounts. Affected applications include OneDrive, Microsoft Edge, the free version of Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot, as well as Word and Excel.
Symptoms of the Bug
Users encounter an error message stating: “You’ll need the Internet for this. It doesn’t look like you’re connected to the Internet.” This occurs even when the device maintains a stable internet connection.
Microsoft’s Recommended Workaround
The issue arises from a specific network connectivity state on the device. Microsoft advises restarting the computer while ensuring it stays connected to the internet. This action typically restores the connectivity state and resolves the problem.
Who Is Impacted?
This bug primarily affects consumer users with Microsoft accounts. Business environments using Entra ID remain unaffected. Only the free version of Microsoft Teams faces issues due to its reliance on Microsoft account sign-ins.
Additionally, Windows 11 Enterprise editions experience separate problems with the March update, such as Bluetooth devices not appearing for pairing. Microsoft has deployed emergency patches for these Enterprise-specific bugs.
Upcoming Resolution
Microsoft confirms a full patch is in development and expected within the next few days. Users should monitor for the update to permanently eliminate the sign-in disruptions.
Those experiencing login failures with Edge, OneDrive, or related apps after the update should apply the restart fix immediately to minimize downtime.
