Socialite and former reality television personality Zana Pali has issued a scathing critique of Melbourne, asserting that the city has lost its former allure due to rising crime, economic hardship, and a perceived lack of vibrancy. Speaking on the podcast ‘The Debrief with Savanna Young,’ Pali expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in Victoria, directly blaming the former Labor government under Premier Jacinta Allan for the city’s perceived decline.

Melbourne’s Lost Vibrancy and Rising Crime Concerns

Pali, a Melbourne resident, described the city as “dead” and “depressing,” directly contrasting it with Sydney, which she now views as having a superior “vibe.” She stated that Melbourne’s restaurants are frequently empty, indicating a significant downturn in social activity and economic confidence. “People aren’t going out. It’s actually quite sad,” she remarked, painting a grim picture of a city that has lost its once-celebrated energy.

Her criticism extended to the state of public safety, with Pali alleging that crime has escalated to alarming levels. She vividly described a situation where residents feel unsafe even leaving their homes, citing incidents of violence. “You can’t leave the house without a machete attack or something happening,” she claimed, adding that “the restaurants were getting blown up.” This assertion comes despite Melbourne’s historical rankings as a highly livable city, a fact she acknowledged but countered with her lived experience.

Pali, who has a background as a criminal lawyer, voiced concerns about the justice system’s effectiveness, suggesting a lack of deterrents for repeat offenders. “Now, it’s just a revolving door. Commit a crime and you’re out on bail,” she stated, arguing that the absence of significant consequences encourages further criminal activity. She specifically mentioned violent incidents in affluent bayside suburbs, such as Brighton, where she resides, and expressed profound concern for the safety of children in public spaces. “You can’t even have your children out on the streets. I would not risk that,” Pali declared, referencing specific incidents of machete-related violence near public transport and shopping areas.

Economic Woes and Government Accountability

Beyond crime, Pali pointed to economic struggles as a major factor in Melbourne’s decline. She attributed these issues to government policies, asserting that Victoria has lost investor confidence. “Everyone’s broke. Our state is broke. Our government has made us broke,” she stated forcefully. Pali also raised concerns about government spending and alleged corruption, citing a substantial sum of money that she believes has been unaccounted for, further eroding public trust and deterring investment.

She believes that the current economic climate offers “no hope” for Victorians and expressed a strong desire for a “fresh start.” Pali indicated that she has discussed these concerns with various political figures, including One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, federal Liberal Party leader Angus Taylor, and Victorian Opposition Leader Jess Wilson. Her message to these figures, she explained, has been consistent: a call for unity against the ruling Labor party.

Political Stance and Future Elections

When asked about her political inclinations, Pali made it clear that her primary objective is the removal of the Labor government from power. “Anybody but Labor,” she stated emphatically when asked about her electoral preferences. She clarified that her support is not tied to any specific opposition party but rather to the overarching goal of unseating the current administration. “I don’t really care who wins, just as long as Labor is out!” she exclaimed.

Pali’s strong sentiments come in the wake of a significant leadership change within Victoria’s Labor government, where Jacinta Allan was recently replaced as Premier by Ben Carroll. Carroll, who has been a cabinet member since 2017, now leads the state. The political landscape in Victoria is dynamic, with discussions about potential minority government scenarios involving parties like One Nation, reflecting broader national polling trends where One Nation has seen a surge in support.

Pali, while ruling out a personal foray into politics, remains committed to being a vocal critic. Her statements highlight a growing sentiment among some residents regarding the perceived decline of Melbourne and a desire for significant political and economic change. The podcast episode, featuring these extensive remarks, is available on various platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

Conclusion

Zana Pali’s outspoken commentary offers a stark perspective on the current state of Melbourne and Victoria, focusing on issues of crime, economic stability, and government performance. Her criticisms, amplified by her public profile, underscore a palpable sense of dissatisfaction and a strong call for change among certain segments of the population. The ongoing political developments and public discourse will likely shape the future trajectory of the state.
