Zverev Survives Scare to Advance at French Open

Alexander Zverev navigated a challenging late-night encounter at the French Open, ultimately securing a 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over local challenger Quentin Halys. This win propels Zverev into a significantly more open last 16 draw.

Breaking Down the Match

Zverev managed to break Halys’s serve in the Frenchman’s opening service game in each of the four sets played. The German then secured a second break to clinch the first two sets. However, with a wide-open path to the later stages of the tournament appearing, Zverev experienced a dip in performance during the third set.

Fueled by the support of the late-night crowd, the 90th-ranked Halys, who hails from the Roland Garros neighborhood, mounted a strong comeback. As the clock ticked past midnight, Halys forced a fourth set.

In the decisive fourth set, Zverev quickly established a 3-0 lead. He then clinched the victory by breaking Halys in a lengthy eighth game, concluding the match in three hours and 10 minutes.

Zverev’s Perspective

“I knew I just had to stay with my game and I’m going to get my chances and in the fourth set I did,” Zverev commented after the match. “I’m very happy I could finish it at 1am not 3am.”

A Shifting Landscape in the Draw

The 29-year-old German, currently ranked third in the world and seeded second at Roland Garros following the withdrawal of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, has now become the highest-ranked seed remaining in the men’s singles. This development follows the earlier loss of Jannik Sinner the previous evening.

Friday’s proceedings saw Zverev’s match on Court Philippe Chatrier follow a dramatic five-set comeback victory by 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca over Novak Djokovic. At the commencement of the evening’s play, the remaining male competitors collectively held 24 Grand Slam singles titles, all belonging to the 39-year-old Serbian.

Looking at the remaining contenders in the last 16, only Zverev and Norwegian Casper Ruud have previously reached a Grand Slam final, with each having lost three such matches.

Looking Ahead

In the upcoming round, Zverev is scheduled to face the 106th-ranked Dutchman Jesper de Jong. De Jong achieved a significant upset by defeating 13th seed Karen Khachanov in a five-set thriller. This match is expected to take place after the current heatwave, which has significantly impacted the tournament’s draw, is anticipated to subside.

“I hope to give myself the chance to win all the matches I play,” Zverev stated, looking forward to the next stage of the competition.
