The San Francisco 49ers encounter significant challenges in contacting wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as they pursue a trade during the offseason. Aiyuk sat out the entire 2025 season and will not return after the team voided a $27 million guarantee in his contract due to his absence from team meetings and required activities.
Contract Details and Injury Background
The 27-year-old receiver operates under a four-year, $120 million contract, including $76 million in guarantees. He has not appeared in a game since suffering tears to his ACL, MCL, and meniscus during an October 2024 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, which many expect to mark his final outing with the 49ers.
Communication Breakdown Delays Trade
League insiders highlight that the trade process drags on because both the 49ers and potential suitors struggle to connect with Aiyuk. Reports indicate he maintains inconsistent communication with the team, complicating negotiations. Other clubs report similar difficulties reaching him.
Sources suggest Aiyuk prefers a release to join his college teammate Jayden Daniels in Washington. However, the 49ers prioritize securing trade value before training camp and refuse to let him go without compensation.
His substantial contract, featuring a $24.935 million option bonus, discourages interest despite the voided guarantees following missed mandatory rehabilitation sessions.
Team Leadership Addresses Situation
General Manager John Lynch actively solicits offers for Aiyuk, stating to reporters, “We’re available. Give us a call.” He added, “He’s an extremely talented player. He’s been an extremely effective player in our league; situation didn’t work itself out here. That’s not to say that it can’t be rekindled somewhere else. And we’d be happy to do something with anyone if the opportunity presented itself.”
In December, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan commented, “We haven’t seen him in forever. That’s the decision they make. It’s been pretty simple for me. I haven’t seen him in a month. It hasn’t been an issue with our team at all. We’ve been plugging away. No big deal. It’s something we’ve been used to for a while.”
