President Donald Trump expressed strong disappointment with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during remarks in the Oval Office, stating that Starmer made a “big mistake” by not providing assistance to address the situation in Iran.
Personal Rebuke and Leadership Comparison
Trump described Starmer as a “nice man” but refused to confirm confidence in his leadership or endorse his continuation as prime minister. He emphasized that the decision rests with the British people. “He hasn’t been supportive and I think it’s a big mistake,” Trump stated, adding that Starmer is “not Winston Churchill.”
Gesturing toward the bust of Winston Churchill displayed in the Oval Office, Trump recounted its history. He noted that former President Barack Obama moved the bust from the Oval Office during his tenure, though it remained in the White House. Upon taking office, Trump ensured its return to the prominent spot.
US-UK Relations and Trade Deal
Speaking alongside Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Trump highlighted the historically strong US-UK relationship, calling it the “oldest” and “longest.” He claimed it had been the best until Starmer’s arrival. Trump pointed to a trade deal he negotiated with the UK, asserting it benefited them significantly after they failed to reach an agreement under the previous administration.
“We made a deal, we made a good deal for them, and frankly, probably wasn’t appreciated,” Trump said. He also expressed anticipation for an upcoming visit from the King.
Aircraft Carriers and Timing Dispute
Trump voiced frustration over Starmer’s offer to deploy two aircraft carriers, criticizing the timing. “Keir was willing to send two aircraft carriers after we won…because essentially there’s no threat for the aircraft carriers right now,” he explained. “And I said no, no, we want things sent before the war, not after the war is won.”
“I’m disappointed with Keir. I like him, I think he’s a nice man, but I’m disappointed,” Trump concluded.
