Renowned Irish actor Ben Keaton, celebrated for his memorable role as Spencer in over 50 episodes of the BBC medical drama Casualty from 1999 to 2002, has passed away at age 70.
Keaton died suddenly at Lincoln County Hospital on Friday. A death notice published in The Irish Times on Sunday confirms his passing, noting that he will be “forever greatly missed, loved and fondly remembered by his ex-wife Polly, son Waldo and daughter Daisy, brothers Des and Thom, sister Jeanette.”
Family Tribute Highlights Illustrious Career
The notice highlights Keaton’s extensive career, including standout TV roles in Father Ted, Emmerdale, Casualty, and The Bill; films such as East is East; and theatre productions like Animal Crackers, Harvey, Cyrano de Bergerac, and Hay Fever. He was a founding member of the improv group South of the River and served as a director of the Creative Academy. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Ex-Wife Pays Emotional Tribute
Keaton’s ex-wife Polly shared a heartfelt statement on Facebook: “So incredibly sorry to say Ben Keaton died last night. It was very sudden and we are all in shock. We had separated several years ago but we had half a lifetime together and infuriated and made each other cry with laughter in equal measure. He was a great dad to Waldo and Daisy and the finest Groucho and Cyrano I have ever seen.”
Industry Peers Mourn Loss
Nottingham Playhouse expressed condolences, stating: “We are so sorry to hear of the death of Ben Keaton, a wonderful actor who is fondly remembered in our 2008 production of Vertigo. Sending our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
Diverse Career in TV, Theatre, and Education
Throughout his career, Keaton appeared in episodes of The Bill, Doctors, and Double Time, and wrote episodes for Balamory, Gumtree, and Hubbub. A accomplished theatre actor and comedian, he began teaching Physical Theatre and Acting for Camera at the University of Lincoln in 2008. In 2013, he founded the Lincoln Film and Television School.
Keaton also portrayed Jeff Brannigan in the ITV soap Emmerdale and delivered a scene-stealing performance as Father Austin Purcell in a 1995 episode of Father Ted.
Viral Reunion Showcases Enduring Legacy
In 2022, Keaton reunited with Father Ted castmates Joe Rooney, Michael Redmond, and Patrick McDonnell for a spontaneous TikTok video that went viral. Reflecting on its success, Keaton noted: “The video went from 500 views to 50,000 and up and up. Joe now says we are up at half a million views on TikTok. It’s incredible.”
He expressed surprise at the lasting fame from his brief Father Ted role: “I appeared in Casualty for three years, nobody cares. I did three minutes on Father Ted and it’s all people want to talk about and something which just sails through time.”
