Charlotte Riley shares intimate details of how her husband, Tom Hardy, sparked their romance with a perfectly brewed cup of tea during filming of the 2009 TV adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Sparking Romance Amid Rehearsals
The couple connected on set while portraying Heathcliff and Cathy. Between intense scene preparations, a chat about their shared northern heritage ignited the spark. Riley, 44, remembers Hardy, 48, offering her a strong brew. “He made me a really decent cup of tea. Strong. There’s not much point if the spoon doesn’t stand up,” she recalls of her initial impressions.
“And he told me that his mother was northern. So I thought, all right then. When somebody can give as good as they get, you know you’re in for a good time,” Riley adds.
She describes Hardy as relaxed and fun-loving on set, countering notions of him as a strict Method actor. “He was just his cheeky-chappy self,” she notes.
Memorable Laughter on the Moors
Riley recounts a hilarious moment during a poignant scene in a small moorland church. Delivering the line, “Whatever our souls are made of, yours and mine are the same,” her northern accent twisted it to sound like “Whatever a**eholes are made of.” Hardy burst into laughter, halting production for the day.
“We were sitting in a pew and I had to turn to Tom and say my line. And he absolutely died laughing… I do need to get a tattoo of that,” she shares.
Family Life and On-Screen Chemistry
Married since 2014, the pair have celebrated 12 years together. They share a 10-year-old son and a seven-year-old daughter. Hardy also has a 17-year-old son, Louis, from a previous relationship.
Their palpable chemistry in Wuthering Heights drew attention. Director Coky Giedroyc notes, “The chemistry was amazing. It got very steamy, to the extent that I had to keep yelling, ‘Cut!'”
Upcoming Projects
Riley stars in the BBC drama Babies, exploring themes of pregnancy, miscarriage, grief, and dating among two couples. The six-part series premieres March 30.
Hardy currently films the second season of Guy Ritchie’s series Mobland.
