Ukrainian grandmaster Anna Muzychuk steps in for India’s Koneru Humpy in the 2026 Women’s Candidates tournament after Humpy withdraws due to security concerns amid rising Middle East tensions. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) confirmed the replacement on Sunday.

Tournament Details and Withdrawal

The prestigious event runs in Cyprus from March 28 to April 16. Humpy cites regional instability as her reason for pulling out, prioritizing personal safety.

FIDE outlined the process on X: “In accordance with the tournament regulations, Koneru’s place was offered to the next highest finisher in the Women’s Events Series 2024–25 who has not yet secured qualification.” The federation added: “As a result, Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine) will join the tournament as her replacement.”

Regional Instability Impacts Travel and Sports

Escalating disruptions in the Middle East, including US-Israeli strikes on Iran, affect Gulf nations, major transit hubs, and lead to cancellations of various sporting events.

Humpy emphasized her decision in an X post: “No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances.”

Updated Player Field

Muzychuk joins Tan Zhongyi, Kateryna Lagno, Aleksandra Goryachkina, Zhu Jiner, Divya Deshmukh, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Bibisara Assaubayeva in the competition.

Relocation Offer Declined

Last week, German tech billionaire Wadim Rosenstein proposed moving the tournament to Germany, offering to cover all organizational and logistical costs to safeguard players and maintain competitive integrity. FIDE rejected the offer.

FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky affirmed: “Nothing has changed,” confirming the event proceeds in Cyprus despite the withdrawal.
