Billionaire Elon Musk proposed covering salaries for TSA personnel during the partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown, but the White House declined due to significant legal hurdles tied to his federal contracts.
Musk’s Generous Proposal
The shutdown began in mid-February when lawmakers could not agree on funding, leaving TSA employees without pay. This has caused staffing shortages and extended security lines at airports across the nation.
Musk posted on X: “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.”
White House Response
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated: “We greatly appreciate Elon’s generous offer. This would pose great legal challenges due to his involvement with federal government contracts.”
She added: “The fastest way to ensure TSA employees — and all DHS employees — get paid is for Democrats to fund the Department of Homeland Security.”
President Donald Trump expressed support earlier, telling reporters: “I’d love it. I think it’s great. Let him do that.”
Struggles of TSA Workers
Acting TSA Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security that many agents live paycheck to paycheck. Officers face severe hardships, including sleeping in cars at airports to save on gas, selling blood and plasma, and juggling multiple jobs while maintaining high performance standards.
McNeill noted: “Many have received eviction notices, lost their childcare, missed bill payments and been charged late fees, damaged their credit, defaulted on loans, and have been unable to even qualify for a loan to help ease the financial burden during the shutdown.”
Political Tensions and Solutions
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blamed Senate Democrats, saying: “We have attempted in good faith numerous times … to go to the Democrats with reasonable offers.” She accused them of intentional disruption: “The cruelty is the point. They want this chaos.”
Democrats seek reforms to immigration enforcement before approving funds.
Trump announced potential deployment of National Guard members to airports and praised Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents assisting at over a dozen locations. On Truth Social, he wrote: “Thank you to our great ICE Patriots for helping. It makes a big difference.”
