Eligibility for Disability Payment Top-Up
Low-income pensioners receiving Attendance Allowance, the middle or highest rate of the care component in Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Adult Disability Payment (ADP) qualify for an additional £86.05 weekly through Pension Credit’s disability element. In Scotland, those claiming Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP), which replaces Attendance Allowance, also benefit. This amounts to £344.20 over four weeks.
Couples over State Pension age where one partner receives a qualifying disability benefit receive the £86.05 top-up. Qualifying couples get £172.10 weekly in total from Pension Credit.
Current Claimants and Unclaimed Benefits
Nearly 1.4 million pensioners in Great Britain claim Pension Credit, averaging £4,300 annually. Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data indicates over 700,000 eligible individuals miss out, often due to misconceptions about savings or home ownership disqualifying them. The benefit remains means-tested and unlocks help with housing, heating, and Council Tax.
Pension Credit guarantees £238 weekly for singles and £363.25 for couples, tax-free for those at State Pension age living in Great Britain. Full 2026/27 rates appear on GOV.UK.
Additional Elements
