Platner Appears at Campaign Event Amidst Sexting Allegations
Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner made his first public appearance on Sunday since allegations surfaced that he engaged in sexting with at least six women. The event, held in Maine, saw a crowd of supporters cheering for the candidate who is challenging incumbent Susan Collins.
Platner, 40, was seen dressed casually in a polo shirt, jeans, and a trucker hat. He spoke about taking his campaign “to the front porches of Maine,” aligning with his stated goal of connecting with voters across the state.
Scandal Details Emerge
The controversy broke earlier this week, revealing that Platner sent sexually explicit messages to multiple women last year. This occurred during a period when he and his wife, Amy Gertner, were undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments to conceive a child.
Reports indicate that Platner’s wife informed his campaign staff about the situation last year, disclosing that she had discovered her husband communicating with up to 12 women via text. This information was reportedly shared with Genevieve McDonald, who served as Platner’s political director until October. Gertner, who considered McDonald a friend, allegedly conveyed this information shortly before Platner was scheduled to participate in a rally with Senator Bernie Sanders over Labor Day weekend, expressing concerns about potential political fallout.
Supporters Rally Behind Platner
Despite the emerging scandal, Senator Bernie Sanders reiterated his endorsement of Platner on Saturday. Sanders drew a comparison between the Maine oyster farmer and New York City’s Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, highlighting the candidate’s progressive platform.
“In Maine, one of our most rural states, we can do the same thing and elect Troy Jackson as Governor and Graham Platner as Senator,” Sanders stated, referencing a successful progressive electoral outcome in another region.
Wife Addresses Allegations
Amy Gertner, married to Platner since 2023, publicly addressed the reports on Saturday evening, calling them “really shameful.” In a video shared to Platner’s campaign page on X, Gertner expressed anger and disappointment that media outlets and individuals were focusing on gossip rather than Platner’s policy positions.
“I wanted to make a statement today about a couple of news articles that are out there about my marriage to Graham,” Gertner said. “So it makes me really angry, disappointed, and I find it really shameful that there’s a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip, instead of talking about real issues that Graham is running on, like healthcare and education and childcare.”
Gertner emphasized the strength of her marriage, acknowledging the inherent difficulties of married life, particularly for newlyweds also navigating infertility and a demanding Senate campaign. “Graham and I have a great marriage. Being married is hard. Being newly married is hard. Being newly married and going through infertility is hard. Being newly married, going through infertility, and a Senate campaign is hard. I don’t even know if I have the right words to describe what we’ve been going through,” she added.
She also revealed that the couple has been seeking support from a marriage counselor and individual therapists to navigate these challenges.
