IMF Slashes UK Growth Forecasts Amid Iran War Economic Fallout

The UK Chancellor faces significant economic challenges as the International Monetary Fund delivers a major downgrade to growth projections, alongside warnings of rising inflation and unemployment. Britain experiences the sharpest revision among G7 nations, largely due to disruptions from the ongoing Iran conflict.

Revised Economic Projections

UK gross domestic product growth now stands at 0.8% for 2026, up from 1.3% previously forecast, with 1.3% anticipated in 2027, down from 1.5%. Last year’s expansion reached a modest 1.4%.

Inflation averages 3.2% this year, easing to 2.4% in 2027, exceeding earlier estimates of 2.5% for 2026. Elevated energy costs, fuel prices, and food inflation drive these pressures.

Unemployment rises to 5.6% in 2026, from 4.9% last year.

Effects of the Iran Conflict

The war, initiated late February by actions involving Donald Trump and Israel against Iran, disrupts global energy markets. Oil and gas prices surge following attacks on facilities and the Strait of Hormuz blockade, impacting production and transport.

Petrol prices climb 19% since the conflict began, while diesel costs increase by over a third.

Opposition Responses

Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride criticizes the economic management: “Being handed the biggest downgrade in the G7 is a clear verdict on Rachel Reeves’ choices – and she’s got no one to blame but herself. The Chancellor hiked national insurance in her first budget, doubling inflation and sending unemployment soaring. She is driving the hospitality industry out of business with business rates increases, and planning the first hike in fuel duty in 15 years. Her ‘plan’ to keep costs down has left us with the highest inflation in the G7, with businesses closing and the cost of living skyrocketing. The Conservatives urge international partners to see Rachel Reeves as a cautionary tale of what happens when a politician has no clue what they’re doing and chooses to hammer business relentlessly.”

Reform UK’s economic spokesman Robert Jenrick adds: “The British people are paying the price for Rachel Reeves’ incompetence. The Chancellor hiked taxes to record levels and doubled down on net zero madness, leaving us uniquely exposed. The Government is coining it in while families struggle. If Reeves wanted to help working people she would abolish VAT and green levies to lower energy bills by £200, and halve VAT at the pumps to give motorists some relief.”

Global Outlook and Next Steps

Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey attend the IMF’s annual meeting in Washington.

IMF Economic Counsellor Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas notes the global outlook has “abruptly darkened,” with the conflict threatening to derail steady growth. He warns: “The closure of the Strait of Hormuz and serious damage to critical production facilities in a region central to global hydrocarbon supply could cause an energy crisis on an unprecedented scale.”

In a severe scenario, global growth falls by 1.3 percentage points in 2026, nearing recession levels below 2%, a threshold breached only four times since 1980, including the financial crisis and Covid-19 pandemic.
