Despite the pressures, Mr. Farage told the BBC that he had resisted the temptation to resign, even when advised to do so by his family. “When you’ve got your family begging you to, it’s not easy,” he commented. “But I think we’re through that now. Should law enforcement initiate a criminal investigation into the footage, the Electoral Commission possesses the authority under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 to request information from the party, potentially including the confiscation of equipment. The Act defines an offense that could encompass any financial transfer benefiting the party, including funding for studies or research conducted on its behalf.
Both the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties have formally reported the allegations to the Metropolitan Police. The police force confirmed on Thursday that it would be assessing the matter and any information provided.
Conservative MP Joe Robertson voiced concerns, stating, “It appears that Reform may have broken the criminal law in relation to foreign and hidden donations.” He urged the Electoral Commission and the police to commence an investigation promptly and to take measures to preserve evidence by seizing hardware from Reform’s offices. Fellow Conservative MP Charlie Dewhirst added, “There are clearly unanswered questions here – not least who are the other individuals Mr Jukes claims may have given potentially illegal donations to Reform UK?”
