Liverpool managers actively explore options for a new midfielder this summer, aiming to bolster the squad under Arne Slot after a challenging season. The club also prioritizes finding a successor for Mohamed Salah, who departs Anfield at the campaign’s end.
Intensifying Competition with Manchester United
These ambitions pose challenges for Manchester United, who pursue similar midfield reinforcements. Key targets like Adam Wharton have drawn interest from both clubs in recent months. Other names linked to Old Trafford include Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Sandro Tonali, with the latter recently connected to Liverpool.
Season Review and Spending Impact
Liverpool clinched the Premier League title last season and entered this one as favorites, yet they now trail Arsenal by 18 points while vying for a Champions League position. Despite investing £446 million last summer—the highest single-window spend in Premier League history—high-profile signings Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike have underperformed.
Midfield Overhaul and Salah Replacement
The team seeks greater mobility, energy, and athleticism in midfield, amid Alexis Mac Allister’s recent form dip and uncertainty over his long-term role. A winger acquisition remains urgent to fill the void left by Salah’s announced exit last month.
Arne Slot on Club Transition
Manager Arne Slot acknowledges Liverpool’s transitional phase. “We are a club in transition,” Slot stated. “A club always has certain cycles with certain players. A lot of them that were so successful for the club have already left or are leaving.”
He added, “As I said many times, the future looks very good, especially if we can sign players after good players leaving this summer. Unfortunately, that also happens with free transfers—that will happen with Mo, that will happen with Robbo, and that has happened already with Trent. As you know, the club that we are, we need to recoup our money and to spend again.”
Slot highlighted last season’s model: “That is the challenge that we had last season; we had to sell 10-11 players to sign five to six. That’s going to be another challenge this summer because we do have to replace the ones who are leaving. But this club have shown so many times that this model works and with this model we can be successful, and I am also proud to work for this club and work our model.”
