The Brutal Turning Point in Shannon and Arran’s Romance
Despite warnings from family and friends, Shannon (Emma Laird) and Arran (Benjamin Coyle-Larner) deepen their connection in Mint, reaching new emotional peaks. Episode 4 unfolds like an extended first date, filled with intimate conversations and explorations of the town.
They end up at a restaurant, where Shannon watches Arran lean against her car. Her affectionate stare shatters when a figure in black, wearing a motorcycle helmet, approaches from behind and shoots him.
Benjamin Coyle-Larner’s Take on the Twist
Benjamin Coyle-Larner shares his thoughts on the dramatic shift. “I don’t think it was in the first thing I read. After meeting Charlie and spending time with her, she felt passionately about not keeping me in the whole thing… nah, I’m joking!”
He adds, “I thought it was awesome because it subverted expectations. The setup presents a love story that’s ultimately a tragedy. What I loved is how it empowers Emma’s character to find strength independently. These two characters reach a point where they can change their circumstances.”
Coyle-Larner continues, “When Arran dies, Shannon must care for herself using what she’s learned. This is powerful—staying with a female lead without a man to save her. It’s beautiful and true to life; it happens often. I was sad but happy to make a brief impact in my first role.”
Creator Charlotte Regan’s Vision
Charlotte Regan, the series creator, writer, and director, explains the decision to end Arran’s arc. “I can’t totally remember the versions, but my producer Theo would know—he’s stressed from every change I’ve made.”
She notes, “I’ve always known I didn’t want a romance where they exist solely for each other. Independence outside the relationship was key.”
Regan elaborates, “The instinct was always there; what changed was the timing and method. I wanted to defy expectations—Arran as the rival family’s ‘bad guy.’ From Shannon’s view, her family starts as heroes, but meeting Arran reveals no clear good or bad; it’s all gray, with everyone struggling.”
“Arran’s episode 4 fate stems from that,” she says.
What’s Next for Shannon?
With Shannon’s father Dylan (Sam Riley) appearing to approve Arran’s hit, tensions loom in their relationship. Viewers await how Shannon navigates her grief and the fallout.
Mint airs on BBC One at 9pm on Monday, April 20, with all episodes on BBC iPlayer from 6am that day.
