Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans declared his team’s victory against his former club Rotherham United as a deserved outcome, asserting that dropping points would have felt like a “robbery.” The Pirates secured their fourth consecutive win, maintaining their position at the top of League Two.

Rotherham Match Analysis

Despite the win, Evans acknowledged that his side was not at their absolute best against the Millers. He attributed this to potential fatigue following a demanding schedule, which included three wins in just eight days. “We’ve won today, deservedly won, but we weren’t at our best today,” Evans stated. “We’ve been at our best for the last three games, and maybe there’s a little bit of fatigue in there.”

The manager opted to stick with the same starting lineup, encouraged by the team’s positive energy in training throughout the week, fueled by their recent success. The victory marked a significant milestone, equaling a club record of 10 consecutive home wins, a feat last achieved stretching back to a match against Grimsby the previous season. Evans expressed confidence in his players’ ability to perform at a higher level, stating, “The lads are capable of stepping up and delivering so much more.”

First Half Dominance and Missed Opportunities

In the first half, Bristol Rovers largely controlled the game, with their goal coming from a well-executed counter-attack. Tommy Leigh initiated the play, passing to Bobby, who then followed up to score from the rebound. Evans lamented the team’s inability to convert two or three additional clear-cut chances that could have extended their lead to 2-0, which he believes would have made the second half more comfortable.

Second Half Stalemate and Defensive Resilience

The second half saw a more even contest, with Rovers showing less attacking inventiveness. Evans cited fatigue as a reason for substitutions made up front, introducing fresh players into a system that was still relatively new to them. He noted that Rotherham created few clear chances, with their most notable opportunity coming in the dying moments of the game. A shot from Brad Young, deflected and hitting the crossbar, was the closest the visitors came to scoring, occurring deep into stoppage time.

Reflecting on the late scare, Evans reiterated his belief in the fairness of the result. “But if they’d have got a point here today, it would have been a robbery,” he concluded.

Club Record and Historical Context

This latest win propelled Bristol Rovers to the top of League Two, a position they secured following a midweek victory. The triumph also saw them match the club’s long-standing record of 10 successive home league wins. This record was originally set in April 1935 and was previously equaled in August 2016. Evans recalled that 2016 season fondly, remembering the strength of that Bristol Rovers side.

Looking ahead, the team is set to return to their training ground to prepare for their next fixture against Grimsby. The focus will be on rigorous preparation, with the prospect of breaking the club’s home win record a secondary consideration for the upcoming home game at The Mem.

The Role of Fan Support

The atmosphere at the stadium was electric, with fans filling the terraces and stands, contributing to another positive home matchday experience. The last league defeat for Rovers occurred on February 7 against Chesterfield. Evans emphasized the crucial role of the supporters in the team’s current success since his arrival.

“It was packed everywhere. We need even people outside trying to get in because we need everyone in,” Evans remarked, highlighting the demand for tickets. He underscored the fundamental importance of the fanbase to the club’s existence. “Without the fans, there is no football club.”

Evans shared a conversation with the club’s chairman, reflecting on their shared commitment to the supporters. “I said to my chairman, he says it to me, we say it together when we have a coffee. He said, ‘I’m a custodian.’ I said, ‘I know you are because of these fans.'” He expressed a deep sense of honor in his role, stating, “And we are absolutely privileged. I’m privileged to manage this football club. And the chairman always tells me he’s privileged to win it. And we’re privileged to represent the Gasheads.”

The unwavering support from the “Gasheads” continues to be a driving force for Bristol Rovers as they aim to build on their impressive home form and league position.
