Manchester United prepares for a crucial Monday night clash against Brentford, where a victory would secure their Champions League qualification. Manager Michael Carrick has spearheaded the team’s resurgence since assuming control in January, but defensive shortages pose significant challenges heading into the season’s final matches.
Defensive Crisis Deepens
Ahead of hosting Brentford, who also vie for European spots, centre-back options remain limited. Ayden Heaven stood as the sole recognized centre-back during the recent win over Chelsea. Concerns mounted further when Leny Yoro, the France U21 international, skipped Thursday’s training session. Yoro had already missed the Chelsea victory, prompting full-back Noussair Mazraoui to pair with Heaven in defence.
Matthijs de Ligt continues to recover from injury, sidelining another key defender. Harry Maguire appears ready for selection against Brentford, though Lisandro Martinez remains suspended. These absences have elevated academy prospect Sonny Aljofree to first-team training. The 21-year-old, who captains the U21 side, returned from a loan at Notts County in January.
Scholes Enjoys Snooker Spotlight
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes drew attention at the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre. Cameras captured the 51-year-old watching Ronnie O’Sullivan’s dominant 10-2 victory over China’s He Guoqiang, advancing ‘The Rocket’ to the last 16.
Scholes arrived as O’Sullivan held a 7-2 lead. BBC commentator John Parrott remarked lightheartedly: “Paul Scholes might have enjoyed this but he’s only going to see three frames of it. Sorry Paul, this man is just too good.” Those frames featured breaks of 113 and 120.
Snooker star Ken Doherty praised Scholes’ presence: “Fantastic. One great watching another. What a player he was! I know he loves the snooker. A lot of the footballers love to play snooker in their spare time. Great to have him here.”
