Arsenal secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Lyon in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final, thanks to a late goal from Olivia Smith. The reigning European champions now hold a slender advantage heading into the return fixture in France.

Early Exchanges and Lyon’s Opener

Arsenal burst out of the blocks with intent, creating chances early on. Olivia Smith, the £1 million signing, exploited space on the right flank after Lyon’s left-back Sofie Svava pushed high. Smith drove toward goal, but her cross deflected, allowing Caitlin Foord a shot from the edge of the box. The Australian winger dragged her effort wide of Christiane Endler’s post amid calls from the home crowd to shoot.

Arsenal dominated the opening 15 minutes, fueled by memories of last season’s triumph—when they overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit against Lyon to reach the final after 18 years. However, Lyon midfielder Jule Brand capitalized on a misplaced pass from Foord to Smith. Brand surged forward, evaded Kim Little, and slotted into the bottom left corner, silencing the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal Fights Back to Level

Into the second half, Arsenal struggled for penetration without Chloe Kelly and Beth Mead on the bench. Renee Slegers watched from the sidelines in casual attire. Relief came with 30 minutes remaining when Katie McCabe won a free-kick 20 yards out. Mariona Caldentey’s low delivery into the box caught Endler off guard. The Lyon goalkeeper fumbled, and Stina Blackstenius’ challenge saw the ball cross the line. VAR confirmed no foul, restoring parity.

Lyon’s Kadidiatou Diani responded with a fierce shot soon after, but Arsenal regained momentum. Foord’s effort forced a save from Endler, setting the stage for the decisive moment.

Smith Seals the Victory

Smith’s persistence paid off as she closed down Endler, who collided with a teammate. The Canadian forward recovered quickly to tap into an empty net, sparking wild celebrations. Arsenal’s fans exhaled in relief, but the team knows the tie remains alive—echoing last season’s comeback trail.

This result positions Arsenal favorably, drawing on experience from their title-winning campaign to chase another Champions League final.
