One word captures the scene at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday evening: chaos. This glamorous event, often dubbed journalism’s Oscars, descended into panic when five shots echoed just outside the Washington Hilton ballroom, mere feet from tables inside.
The Shooting Incident
The shooter attempted to force entry into the venue, triggering screams and tears among attendees. Journalists ducked under tables and chairs—or, in some cases, against railings—while capturing photos and videos to record what authorities later identified as the third attempt on President Donald Trump’s life.
Security Response and Evacuations
Secret Service agents swiftly surged to the stage, forming a protective ring around President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. SWAT teams and additional Secret Service personnel then rushed Trump officials, including Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Vice President JD Vance, pulling them from the stage amid the frenzy.
In a surreal twist, some Trump supporters began chanting “USA” and “God Bless America.” Congressional leaders, such as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Senator John Fetterman, along with Cabinet members, received immediate escorts out of the ballroom. Their security details pushed through the crowd to clear paths.
President Trump later commented during a White House press conference that he initially mistook the noise for a server dropping a food tray—a reaction shared by many in the initial confusion.
Attempts to Flee and Official Announcements
Attendees bolted for the exits, only to encounter a human barricade of hotel staff who held firm until receiving further instructions. Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, returned to the dais and announced that the dinner would continue as planned.
The decision stunned many, including groups who had conversed earlier and now demanded to leave. One couple urged others to join their exit, reaching partway to the doors before an update required everyone to return to seats and resume the program.
Reluctantly, most complied amid the disorder. Minutes later, Jiang reappeared to declare the event postponed to a future date, citing federal policy. Hotel staff then evacuated all non-guests, allowing only those with Hilton reservations to remain.
