Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer describes a stabbing incident in the predominantly Jewish area of Golders Green, north London, as “deeply concerning.” Authorities arrest a man spotted running along Golders Green Road with a knife, targeting Jewish members of the public.
Incident Details
Members of the Jewish security group Shomrim detain the suspect before police officers deploy a Taser and take him into custody. Shomrim reports two individuals sustain stab wounds and receive treatment from Hatzola, the Jewish volunteer ambulance service.
The attack occurs about half a mile from a memorial wall targeted in an attempted arson on Monday. It also stands near the site where four Jewish community ambulances burn in late March. These events form part of several recent alleged assaults on Jewish sites in London.
Prime Minister’s Response
Speaking to MPs, the Prime Minister states: “It is deeply concerning to everyone in this House. There is now a police investigation and I think we all need to do everything we can to support that investigation and be absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offences, the like of which we have seen too much recently.”
Community and Official Reactions
The Community Security Trust (CST) confirms the knife attack and praises the rapid response: “There has been a knife attack today in Golders Green. The suspect has been arrested. We would like to thank Shomrim London, Hatzola and the Metropolitan Police for their swift response. We are working closely with the police and urge anyone with information to contact the police, Shomrim and CST immediately.”
The Board of Deputies of British Jews notes: “We are aware of a reported stabbing incident in Golders Green, with two injured. The police have apprehended a suspect. We are liaising with the CST, Government and police to understand what has happened and ensure a forceful response.”
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp labels the stabbings “yet another appalling antisemitic attack.” He adds: “The Jewish community are not being properly protected from this hate. We have seen Iran sponsoring antisemitic attacks and Islamist extremism run rampant. The Government must urgently step up tangible actions against antisemitism, Iran and Islamist extremism.”
Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green, Sarah Sackman, declares: “Attacks on British Jews are an attack on Britain itself.” As Courts Minister, she continues: “I have been made aware of a serious stabbing in Golders Green. The suspect has been detained. I want to thank the vital work of Shomrim, who apprehended the perpetrator; Hatzola, the police and CST. It is unconscionable that Jews are being targeted in this way. I am meeting with the Home Secretary imminently to discuss the urgent situation.”
