Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, accepted a £5 million gift from major donor Christopher Harborne prior to becoming a Member of Parliament. The donation, made in early 2024, does not appear in his register of interests, prompting accusations of breaching Commons rules from both Labour and the Conservatives.

Donor Background and Party Support

Christopher Harborne, a British cryptocurrency investor based in Thailand, provided the largest single donation to a UK political party last year with £9 million to Reform UK. The additional £5 million to Farage occurred separately before his election.

Accusations of Rule Violations

Labour Party chair Anna Turley stated that Farage appears to have broken the rules by failing to declare the cash from his billionaire backer. Conservative Party chair Kevin Hollinrake emphasized that as a new MP, Farage should have registered the gift, questioning why Reform UK believes the rules do not apply to them and describing the situation as suspicious. The Conservatives have referred the matter to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.

Farage’s Team Responds

A Reform UK spokesman clarified that the payment was a personal, unconditional gift received before the election, asserting confidence that all declarations comply with regulations. The Commons code of conduct requires new MPs to register current financial interests and any registrable benefits from the prior 12 months within one month of election.

Security Concerns Prompt Gift

Farage explained that Harborne, an ardent supporter, grew concerned about his safety following a 2019 milkshake incident during a Brexit Party campaign in Newcastle. Farage noted past failures to secure Home Office funding and accepted the need for self-reliance. “I’m very much on my own and will be for the rest of my life, and I have to face up to that grim reality,” he stated.

Recent Attack on Farage’s Home

Farage revealed that his home faced an arson attempt in early 2025 when a lit device was pushed through the letterbox while he was away. The fire burned out in the porch, and police investigated without identifying suspects. He disclosed the incident publicly for the first time, citing prior worries about escalating security needs.

In a recent interview, Farage expressed concern that ongoing threats could deter capable individuals from public life, stating, “My worry about it is that if you continue down this path you’ll finish up with good people who should go into public life just not doing it and that’s a real concern.”
