Burnham Warned: Ed Miliband as Chancellor a ‘Disaster’

Concerns Mount Over Potential Miliband Chancellorship

Andy Burnham is facing strong objections to appointing Ed Miliband as Chancellor, with critics warning such a move would be a “disaster for Britain.” The prospect arises amid speculation that Burnham could become Prime Minister within weeks, potentially succeeding Sir Keir Starmer. If this scenario unfolds, there is significant expectation that Miliband, the current Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, would take the Treasury portfolio, replacing Rachel Reeves.

Criticism Over Energy Policy and Economic Impact

Opponents argue that the country risks becoming an “energy vassal state” under Miliband’s leadership, with some asserting he is unfit to manage the nation’s economy. Miliband has drawn widespread criticism for his decision to prohibit new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea, a policy decried as “one of the greatest acts of industrial self-harm in a generation,” particularly in light of rising household energy bills and concerns about potential interruptions to gas imports during international conflicts.

Analysis indicates that Britain already faces some of the highest electricity bills among major economies, and there is cross-party apprehension that Miliband’s policies could severely damage the nation’s vital oil and gas industry. Reports suggest Miliband, who previously served under then-Chancellor Gordon Brown, has been advising Burnham on economic matters and was instrumental in the Mayor’s support for the government’s fiscal rules aimed at stabilizing bond markets.

Endorsements and Opposition to Miliband’s Economic Vision

Further signaling a potential move to Number 11, Downing Street, Miliband has received an endorsement for the Chancellor role from Lord Nick Macpherson, a former permanent secretary at the Treasury. However, Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride has voiced strong disapproval, stating, “Ed Miliband wants to sacrifice our economy on the altar of net zero. He would be a disaster for Britain if he ever got near the Treasury.” Stride further criticized current economic policy, claiming Rachel Reeves has already burdened businesses and households with tax increases, and that Miliband would exacerbate these issues with higher energy costs and significant taxpayer expenditure on “green vanity projects.”

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has also ed alarm, labeling Miliband’s potential appointment as Chancellor an “ultimate Westminster insult” to energy sector workers, accusing him of already contributing to the loss of “1000 energy jobs a month.”

Shadow Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho launched a sharp critique, asserting, “Andy Burnham said one of his priorities was reindustrialisation, and yet one of Ed Miliband’s legacies as Energy Secretary will be his obsession with shutting down the North Sea – one of the greatest acts of industrial self-harm in a generation.” Coutinho added, “That alone should disqualify him from running a bath, let alone the British economy.”

Expert Warnings on Energy Security and Economic Resilience

Industry figures have also voiced concerns. Enrique Cornejo of Offshore Energies UK warned that the UK possesses “less than two weeks worth of stored gas supply,” highlighting the vulnerability to international price fluctuations due to increasing reliance on imports. Sebastian Charleton of the Adam Smith Institute described Miliband’s exploration ban as a “well-intentioned but disastrous mistake.” He argued that domestic extraction builds resilience, creates jobs, fuels growth, and generates tax revenue, acting as an economic shock absorber during global energy crises.

Andy Mayer, an energy analyst at the Institute of Economic Affairs, commented, “We don’t have to imagine what his economic plan would be as Chancellor because we’ve been living with it for nearly 20 years… It means state interference in the name of moral crusades in every area of our lives and at great cost, but it will make no difference at all to the global thermostat.”

An anonymous manager in the oil and gas exploration sector based in Aberdeen ed the need for a policy shift. “The UK has handcuffed itself to net zero targets and the entirely false and damaging binary that you can either drill or transition to renewables. The fact is that we need to do both,” the manager stated. “We need oil and gas today, and there is broad political and scientific consensus that we’ll still need it for a long time to come as renewable capacity increases to required levels.” The manager emphasized that North Sea operations adhere to high safety and environmental standards and that the UK is well-positioned to bridge the transition, benefiting the economy and taxpayers. Projections suggest North Sea extraction could meet domestic demand during the shift to net zero.

Concerns were raised about the UK becoming an “energy vassal state,” with significant job losses in Aberdeen impacting the economy and tax revenues. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero denies “shutting down” North Sea extraction, but Sean Ridley of the Centre for Policy Studies predicts a substantial oil and gas shortfall by 2035, arguing that the ban merely replaces domestic production with imports.

Government Response and Future Outlook

A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero stated, “Oil and gas production will be with us for decades to come, and we will manage existing fields for the entirety of their lifespan – while actively scaling up clean energy industries in the North Sea. Issuing new licences to explore new fields cannot give us energy security and will not take a penny off bills. Our ambitious plans will make the North Sea a clean energy powerhouse and support up to 40,000 new jobs in Scotland by 2030.”

Representatives for Andy Burnham’s campaign declined to comment on the matter.
