Newcastle Knights player Jermaine McEwen is facing serious charges after allegedly being caught driving under the influence and with a suspended license. The 21-year-old has been referred to the National Rugby League’s integrity unit and is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
Driving Charges Surface
Reports indicate that police have charged McEwen with low-range drink driving and driving while his license was suspended. The incident came to light after McEwen himself informed the club’s management. Subsequently, the Newcastle Knights reported the matter to the NRL integrity unit.
The club issued a statement confirming the ongoing investigation. “A thorough process continues to be undertaken by all parties required,” the statement read. “Until due process is completed, the Newcastle Knights will not make any further comment.”
Impact on Knights’ Season
McEwen has been a consistent performer for the Knights this season, establishing himself as an 80-minute second-rower under coach Justin Holbrook. He has played in 12 consecutive matches, missing only 21 minutes of game time. His contributions have been instrumental in the team’s current fourth-place standing on the ladder.
McEwen’s strong form this year has been a significant factor in his development. He was recognized as the 2023 SG Ball player of the year and recently re-signed with the Knights until the end of 2028.
Coach Praises Player’s Performance
Prior to these charges, coach Justin Holbrook had expressed his satisfaction with McEwen’s progress. “Jermaine continues to exceed our expectations this year,” Holbrook commented following the contract extension announcement.
Despite his on-field success, McEwen is now set to confront legal proceedings related to the alleged driving offenses. He has been named in the squad for the Knights’ upcoming match against Melbourne on Friday night.
