New ‘Saw’ Game Promises Gruesome Asymmetric Horror
Prepare for a visceral experience as Saw: Genesis emerges as a more ambitious take on the franchise’s interactive adaptations. Developed through a collaboration between Bloober Team’s Broken Mirror Games subsidiary and Anshar Studios, the game leverages their expertise in the horror genre to deliver a unique experience. Recent gameplay revelations at SGF 2026 have shed light on its innovative design.
Asymmetric Gameplay: Judge vs. Accused
At its core, Saw: Genesis features an asymmetric gameplay structure, pitting one player as the ‘Judge’ against three others as the ‘Accused’. This setup echoes successful titles like Evolve and Dead by Daylight. The Judge assumes the role of a post-World War I Jigsaw Killer, serving as a precursor to the iconic antagonist known from the film series. Lionsgate has reportedly approved the narrative and settings, cementing Saw: Genesis as canon within the franchise’s extensive ten-movie universe.
The Judge’s Arsenal of Torment
The Judge is equipped with a formidable array of tools to torment the Accused. This includes the ability to strategically place deadly traps, utilize exclusive hidden corridors and elevators for surprise attacks, and generally sow psychological terror. The Judge begins each match with a comprehensive map and complete knowledge of resource locations. Additionally, a noise-detection skill allows the killer to pinpoint player locations, even through solid obstacles. A non-player ‘Accomplice’ can also assist the Judge by abducting downed players or forcing them into trap rooms. Hallucinogenic gas is another weapon in the Judge’s arsenal, inducing hallucinations in the Accused that make them perceive imminent attacks.
Vulnerability and Accused Counterplay
Despite their overwhelming power, the Judge is not invincible. The antagonist is physically vulnerable and can be cornered by the Accused, especially if they manage to find weapons hidden throughout the levels. The Accused, by contrast, benefit from their numerical advantage. Developers have showcased various strategies, such as splitting the Judge’s attention or executing high-risk maneuvers to reach objectives quickly, thereby limiting the Judge’s time to set up elaborate traps.
Cooperation and Sacrifice in Rehabilitation
As the Accused work collectively to complete challenges, they will face difficult decisions that may involve personal sacrifice to escape traps or accelerate task completion. Witnessed gameplay segments depicted harrowing scenarios, including barbed wire entanglements and scalding hot levers. Player health is presented as a crucial resource that can be expended to avoid immediate death, provided the cost doesn’t prove fatal itself.
Each round is designed to be intense and concise, lasting between 10 to 15 minutes. These rounds feature two distinct challenge rooms aimed at testing the Accused’s cooperative abilities. The core mechanic encourages players to consider self-inflicted harm to expedite solutions and gain an advantage over the Judge. These challenge rooms serve as critical bottlenecks, gating progress through different sections of the map.
However, haste may not always be the wisest approach. If an Accused player falls victim to a trap, they face a grim choice within the game’s ‘Rehabilitation’ system. While fellow Accused can intervene, players may opt for self-sacrifice, such as losing a hand or an eye, to escape. This choice comes with the consequence of navigating the remaining game with a significant physical limitation.
Multiple Endings and Future Development
Saw: Genesis offers a variety of potential outcomes for each match. The Accused can perish in traps, run out of time and face a grim fate from their headgear, successfully defeat the Judge, or manage to escape the level entirely.
As the game progresses into its alpha testing phase, the development team appears keen on refining and adjusting the gameplay based on player interactions with the core concepts. The dynamic between the warring factions, and particularly the appeal of playing as the manipulative mastermind, presents an intriguing challenge for balancing the experience.
Saw: Genesis has opened its playtest waitlist and is slated for release on Steam Early Access in the near future.
