Knicks Stage Stunning Comeback, Spurs Point Guard Under Fire

In a breathtaking turn of events at Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks orchestrated a monumental 29-point comeback to defeat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The victory, sealed by a dramatic tip-in with mere seconds remaining, has put the Knicks on the brink of a championship, leading 3-1 in the series. However, the post-game analysis has focused heavily on a critical decision by Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox in the game’s closing moments.

Barkley Slams ‘Dumbass Play’

Basketball analyst Charles Barkley did not hold back in his assessment of the Spurs’ performance, labeling them the “dumbest basketball team in the history of civilization” following the collapse. Barkley specifically pointed to Fox’s choice to attempt a contested layup with a one-point lead and less than ten seconds on the clock. This decision allowed New York’s OG Anunoby to block the shot, a pivotal moment that directly led to Anunoby scoring the game-winning basket.

“That was a dumbass play,” Barkley stated, emphasizing that Fox was not forced to shoot. “He could have just got fouled, there was no reason for him to shoot that ball.” At the time of the play, the Spurs were in the bonus, meaning any foul would have sent Fox to the free-throw line. Analysts suggest that making both free throws would have extended San Antonio’s lead to three points, forcing the Knicks to attempt a difficult three-pointer to tie the game.

Fox Explains His Decision

Following the game, Fox addressed the media, explaining his thought process. “I tried to get a layup to get up three,” he told reporters. “Force them to need a three. OG made a good block.” Despite this explanation, the outcome of the play has drawn widespread criticism.

Series of Mistakes Cited

The criticism extended beyond the final possession. Barkley further elaborated on the Spurs’ struggles, stating, “The San Antonio Spurs helped the New York Knicks win this game by doing some of the stupidest-ass stuff I’ve ever seen on a basketball court.” The report also highlighted other questionable decisions by Fox earlier in the game, including an unnecessary step-back three-pointer and two costly turnovers in the third quarter. Another critical moment involved Anunoby tipping the ball away from Fox, leading to a difficult, contested three-point attempt that ultimately missed.

Wemby and Rotation Also Questioned

While Fox has become a focal point of the criticism, some observers believe other Spurs players also share blame. Notably, Victor Wembanyama’s missed two crucial free throws late in the game has also been cited. One analyst on X, Kevin O’Connor, observed, “A total choke job by Wembanyama last night. Had fear in his eyes at the line when he bricked both free throws. Seems Fox is taking most of the criticism for his dumb decisions. But Wemby blew it again too.” Additionally, the Spurs’ rotation strategy, utilizing only seven players, has been brought into question by some fans.

Fox’s Statistics and Game 5 Outlook

De’Aaron Fox finished Game 4 with 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field, along with seven assists and four turnovers. The series now shifts back to San Antonio for Game 5 on Saturday, where the Knicks have the opportunity to secure their first NBA championship since 1973.
