Tragic Mid-Air Collision Claims Six Lives in Rio de Janeiro
Eyewitnesses have described the harrowing scenes following a catastrophic mid-air helicopter collision that resulted in the deaths of six individuals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 14th, when two helicopters collided over the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood.
Devastating Aftermath and Investigation Underway
One of the aircraft plummeted onto the parking lot of a car dealership, striking several electric vehicles and igniting a fire that was subsequently extinguished by emergency services. Officials have confirmed that an investigation is actively underway to determine the precise cause of the mid-air collision.
Fernandes de Freitas, a tire repair worker who witnessed the event, recounted the terrifying moments. “It was terrifying, absolutely horrifying,” de Freitas stated. He described seeing one of the helicopters engulfed in flames after the collision and observed a passenger ejecting from the other aircraft before it crashed to the ground.
Prominent Figures Among the Victims
Among the deceased is content creator Gaspar Prim Díaz, widely known as Gaspi, an Argentine personality with a significant following of over 2.8 million on YouTube. Gaspi was reportedly just 23 years old at the time of the tragedy.
His art and sensibility were celebrated by his streaming channel, Blender, which posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Thanks for your art, your magic and your sensibility, every one of us will miss you.”
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB), through its Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), has dispatched investigators from the Third Regional Service for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (SERIPA III) to the scene. Their initial actions involve meticulous data collection, evidence preservation, and an assessment of the damage to determine the factors leading to the accident.
Tributes Pour In for Victims
Tributes have poured in for the victims. YouTube personality and television personality KSI expressed his grief, stating on X: “Can’t believe I’m actually having to type this. You’re 32 man. You should still be here. You still had so much life to live. So much music to make. So much content to make. You’re a legend and will always be a legend. Still doesn’t feel real. Genuinely feel sick. I love you bro.”
The precise identities of all six individuals on board the helicopters have not yet been officially released, pending notification of next of kin.
