New Home Speaker Aims to Outperform Competitors
The competition in the smart speaker market is intensifying as Google introduces its latest offering, the Home Speaker, designed to rival existing AI-powered assistants. This move comes shortly after Amazon revealed its enhanced Echo lineup, featuring the premium Echo Studio with its advanced Alexa capabilities.
Advanced AI and Audio Capabilities
Google’s new Home Speaker boasts room-filling audio and sophisticated AI features powered by Gemini. The company states that users can expect more natural conversations, the ability to brainstorm ideas, and seamless follow-up questions without the need for repetition. Gemini is also engineered to handle interruptions, changes of direction, and mid-conversation corrections without losing context.
Beyond its conversational prowess, the speaker functions as a central hub for smart home management. Users can control lighting, heating, and other connected devices through simple voice commands.
Enhanced Entertainment and Design
For entertainment purposes, the Home Speaker is equipped with 360-degree audio, delivering deeper bass. It can be paired with other Google Home Speakers to create an immersive multi-room audio experience. The device also offers direct integration with Google’s TV Streamer, aiming to enhance movie nights with more cinematic sound.
A visual indicator, a glowing light at the base of the speaker, has been incorporated to clearly signal when Gemini is actively listening, providing users with added assurance.
Sustainable Design and Pricing
The speaker is available in two color options: Porcelain and Hazel. Its fabric exterior is constructed using an innovative 3D knitting process that significantly reduces material waste, highlighting a focus on sustainable design.
In the United States, the Google Home Speaker is priced at $99.99. Pricing for the UK market is still to be announced.
Subscription Requirements
It is important to note that many of Gemini’s most advanced functionalities will require a Google Home Premium subscription. Purchasers of the new speaker will receive a complimentary six-month subscription. Following this introductory period, the service will cost £8 per month.
