A significant update for the acclaimed strategy game is now available, introducing a highly anticipated feature for local multiplayer enthusiasts: hotseat play. This new patch, version 1.4.1, rolled out today, June 23rd, allowing players to gather around a single PC for turn-based matches, reminiscent of a board game experience.
Hotseat Multiplayer Arrives
The addition of hotseat multiplayer means players can now take turns controlling their civilizations on the same computer. This mode is designed to foster friendly (or not-so-friendly) competition, allowing for direct interaction and banter between players as turns pass. The developers have highlighted the unique dynamic that arises from playing in close proximity, potentially leading to intense strategic discussions and playful rivalries.
New Archipelago Map and Landscape Generation
Beyond the multiplayer enhancements, the update introduces a new archipelago map type. This map leverages the latest landscape generation technology to create more randomized and naturally appearing world layouts. The existing archipelago map has also been updated and renamed to Archipelago Hemispheres.
Deeper City Management and Government Overhaul
Player engagement with their cities has been enhanced with the introduction of five distinct city moods. These moods are now visually represented, allowing players to gauge the sentiment of their population. Managing citizen happiness is expected to become more complex as the game progresses, with increasing demands from a growing civilization.
These happiness mechanics are closely tied to a revamped government system. Different governmental structures now offer unique passive bonuses that are influenced by the number of happy settlements and their overall happiness levels. Furthermore, switching to a new government type now grants exclusive traditions, providing boosts such as increased settlement happiness near wonders or enhanced culture generation from great works.
Adjustments to Celebrations and New DLC
Celebrations have been streamlined, with their duration reduced from 10 turns to six. However, the themed bonuses associated with these celebrations are now designed to be more impactful and align with the identity of the player’s chosen government. The frequency of celebration opportunities has also been increased.
In addition to the free content, the update coincides with the release of the first part of the Brush and Blade DLC. This downloadable content focuses on historical Japanese civilizations, featuring Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a new leader. A second part of this DLC is scheduled for release later in the summer.
