Mercedes Drivers Downplay Championship Hopes Amidst Austrian GP Pressure
Mind games have commenced in Austria as Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have focused on bolstering each other’s championship prospects. Following Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona, he now leads Russell by nine points and trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 41 points. This marks the first Grand Prix of the year where Mercedes has not secured a win. Despite this, Russell emphasized the intense pressure facing the Silver Arrows in the scorching heat of Spielberg this weekend, where the FIA has issued a heat hazard warning.
Russell Praises Antonelli and Ferrari’s Resurgence
Speaking about Antonelli, Russell stated, “He is still very much the driver out front and is performing incredibly and consistently.” He added, “Kimi is still very much the driver out front and is performing really incredibly and consistently, but Ferrari feel like they’re coming and Lewis is at the forefront of that.” This suggests a strategic attempt to shift the spotlight away from Mercedes’ own performance and acknowledge the strengths of their rivals.
Hamilton Focuses on Immediate Performance
Hamilton reiterated his stance from the post-Barcelona race, indicating no immediate focus on an eighth world title. “There’s a long way to go. We’re not arriving at this weekend thinking about the championship. We’re thinking about this weekend, executing the best we can,” he commented. Hamilton elaborated on his approach, stating, “My head has been back down, the sacrifices required to make sure I arrive 100 percent so I can deliver – especially knowing how far my performance reaches. I am thinking about each race, arriving and executing as we did at the last race, with pit-stops, with strategy, we were all in sync, and having that all in one weekend is the most important thing, and not about what is going to happen in 15 races’ time.” This strategy emphasizes a race-by-race mentality rather than long-term championship aspirations.
Ferrari’s Power Unit Update and Hamilton’s Reaction
This weekend could prove significant for Ferrari’s efforts to close the gap on Mercedes. The Italian team believes their car is competitive, perhaps even superior to Mercedes in certain aspects, with the exception of engine power. However, Ferrari is set to introduce the first of their two permitted power unit updates for the year. Hamilton acknowledged the potential impact of this upgrade, stating, “This weekend we do have a new engine. It’s a step, it’s not the whole gap, but it’s a step, it’s one foot forwards, which I’m really proud and thankful for.”
Mercedes Acknowledges Tough Competition
Despite the introduction of new components, Hamilton maintained that Mercedes remains the team to beat. “Still, Mercedes are the team to beat, they’ve won everything else and they’ve been just incredible this year. They’ve got a great car. It’s an amazing team, a world championship team,” he said. He concluded by acknowledging the formidable challenge ahead: “We have a real battle on our hands and it’s going to take absolutely everyone full hands-on deck for the rest of the year to even come close to competing with them, but I don’t think it’s impossible.” This sentiment underscores the high level of competition expected throughout the remainder of the season.
