Marta Kostyuk, the Ukrainian tennis player, has captured significant attention at Wimbledon not only for her performance on the court but also for her striking on-court attire. Following the viral success of her initial bridal-inspired design, Kostyuk debuted a second iteration, the ‘Marta Dress 2.0’, which has resonated deeply with fans and spectators alike. This latest ensemble continues the theme of wedding-inspired fashion, blending elegance with the high-performance demands of professional tennis.

A Unique On-Court Fashion Statement

The ‘Marta Dress 2.0’ builds upon the success of Kostyuk’s 2024 design, which itself was a court-ready adaptation of her 2023 wedding gown. That initial outfit featured a sheer white overlay atop a sleeveless dress, a design also created in collaboration with her kit sponsor, Wilson. For the current tournament, the ‘Marta Dress 2.0’ reimagines this concept using a performance-ready fabric with a lace pattern reminiscent of a bridal veil.

Wilson described the design as a ‘sophisticated two-piece construction consisting of a bra, vest and skirt system, accented with technical lace detailing.’ The brand emphasized that this aesthetic choice does not compromise functionality, stating, ‘What appears to be delicate, proves to be indestructible with a four-way stretch performance weave,’ ensuring it meets the rigorous requirements of elite competition.

Player’s Perspective and Fan Reception

Kostyuk expressed her surreal feelings about having a dress named after her and co-envisioned by her. “To have a dress named after me, that was envisioned by me, feels absolutely surreal,” she shared. She highlighted the collaborative process with the Wilson team, particularly mentioning Joelle, and praised their ability to create looks that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional for on-court performance.

The limited-edition ‘Marta Dress 2.0’ was made available for purchase, and despite a price tag of £150, it has already seen widespread sell-outs, underscoring its popularity. Fans have widely lauded the dress for its elegant and unique design. Following her opening-round victory, Kostyuk posted a video of herself twirling on court, showcasing the skirt’s fluidity, with the caption ‘first dance complete.’ This post garnered enthusiastic responses, with one fan calling it the ‘Best outfit in tour,’ and another declaring it ‘The dress of my dreams.’

A Nod to Tennis History and Current Trends

The significance of Kostyuk’s attire extends beyond immediate fan appreciation. Her 2024 kit, the precursor to the current design, has been acquired by the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum at the All England Club, marking it as a potential archival piece in tennis fashion history. This recognition highlights the impact of her innovative approach to on-court style.

Kostyuk’s stylish presentation is complemented by her strong grass-court form. Coming off a successful clay-court season that included a title win in Madrid and a semi-final appearance at the French Open, she has advanced through the Wimbledon draw with notable victories. Her performance in the early rounds, including wins over Nadia Podoroska and Anna Blinkova, demonstrates her readiness for the tournament.

Wimbledon’s Evolving Fashion Landscape

Marta Kostyuk is not the only player at this year’s Championships to make a fashion statement. Several other stars have invested considerable thought into their tournament outfits. Naomi Osaka’s ensemble, inspired by traditional Japanese ceremonial dress, has also drawn considerable attention. On the men’s side, players like Taylor Fritz and Novak Djokovic have opted for more formal looks, taking cues from Roger Federer’s iconic 2006 blazer style.

These sartorial choices reflect a broader trend at Wimbledon and in professional tennis, where players are increasingly using their on-court appearances to express personal style and engage with fashion. Kostyuk’s bridal-inspired dresses, however, have particularly captured the public’s imagination, merging the romance of a wedding with the athleticism of professional tennis.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament progresses, Marta Kostyuk is set to face further challenges. Her next match against American player Emma Navarro in the third round promises to be a competitive encounter. Regardless of the outcome, Kostyuk has already made a significant mark at Wimbledon, solidifying her reputation as one of the tournament’s most fashionable and talked-about athletes.
