The Australian Football League (AFL) is set for a significant Round 18 on Saturday, July 11, 2026, with four crucial matches impacting the race for the top six and wildcard playoff positions. The day kicks off with a vital clash between St Kilda and Port Adelaide, followed by GWS Giants against Geelong, Carlton versus Hawthorn, and finally, Adelaide Crows hosting the Gold Coast Suns.

St Kilda vs. Port Adelaide: A Must-Win Encounter

The day’s action begins at Docklands with St Kilda facing Port Adelaide. Both teams are in desperate need of a victory to bolster their finals aspirations. St Kilda currently sits outside the top 10, while Port Adelaide is also battling to stay within touching distance of the playoff spots. A win for either side would significantly improve their chances of securing a place in the top eight or at least a wildcard berth.

Giants and Cats Battle for Finals Positioning

Later in the day, the GWS Giants will host Geelong at Sydney Showground. For Geelong, this match is critical for maintaining their pursuit of automatic finals qualification. After a recent dip in form, the Cats are looking to secure a win to stay close to the top teams. The Giants, meanwhile, are aiming to build on recent successes and potentially break into the top 10, demonstrating their growing competitiveness in the league.

Carlton and Hawthorn Clash at the MCG

The traditional Saturday night fixture sees 10th-placed Carlton taking on the formidable Hawthorn at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). This encounter presents a stern test for Carlton as they aim to solidify their position in the top eight. Hawthorn, known for their strong performances, will be looking to secure a win that could propel them further up the ladder.

Adelaide Crows vs. Gold Coast Suns: Suns Seek to End Losing Streak

In the final match of the day, the Adelaide Crows will host the Gold Coast Suns at Adelaide Oval. The Suns arrive at this game burdened by a five-game losing streak and face an uphill battle to keep their faint wildcard hopes alive. A victory against the Crows is essential if they are to have any chance of extending their season beyond the regular rounds.

WorkSafe Victoria Investigates AFL Concussion Protocols

In parallel with the on-field action, a significant development has emerged regarding player safety. WorkSafe Victoria has confirmed it is investigating alleged failings by the AFL concerning concussion protocols. This investigation reportedly examines whether the league adequately protected players from the risks associated with repeated head impacts during training and matches, particularly focusing on contact training and collision load tracking from late 2022 onwards.

The investigation follows a recent report by Four Corners, which highlighted that 33 Australian rules players, including 19 professionals or semi-professionals, had been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, can only be definitively diagnosed post-mortem. Prior to the Four Corners investigation, only five such diagnoses were known among professional AFL players.

It is noted that WorkSafe Victoria previously concluded an investigation into the AFL’s management of concussion risks in December 2022, finding no identifiable offences by the league at that time. The current inquiry will scrutinize whether current practices meet occupational health and safety standards.

AFL Round 18: A Pivotal Day for Finals Contenders

As Round 18 unfolds, the stakes are exceptionally high for multiple clubs. The results of these four matches will have a direct impact on the AFL ladder, shaping the final standings and determining which teams are best positioned for a deep finals run. Fans can expect a day filled with intense competition as teams fight for every point, knowing that the margin for error is rapidly diminishing.

The day’s proceedings, commencing with the Saints and Power, promise a full slate of compelling Australian Rules Football action, with each game carrying significant weight for the clubs involved and the broader league landscape.
