Bernard Arnault Addresses ‘Fat People’ Hiring Claims at LVMH

Bernard Arnault, the wealthiest individual in Europe and head of the luxury conglomerate LVMH, has publicly responded to an investigation that suggested his company does not hire individuals perceived as overweight. The claims, published by French newspaper Le Monde, alleged that employees at LVMH’s Parisian headquarters are predominantly young, slim, and well-dressed.

LVMH’s Stance on Employee Appearance

An investigative series by Le Monde described the typical employee at LVMH’s headquarters as “straight-standing, and mostly young, pretty and slim,” further asserting that “you would not come across a single overweight or sloppily dressed employee.” This portrayal sparked a response from Arnault, who is the chairman and CEO of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

In a multi-page statement shared on LVMH’s X (formerly Twitter) account, Arnault addressed the findings with a touch of humor. He offered an apology for what he termed a “failure of bodily diversity” and humorously stated he would discuss the matter with the company canteen staff. This response came as part of a broader investigation by Le Monde that delved into various aspects of Arnault’s business empire, family dynamics, and public influence.

Broader Context of the Investigation

The Le Monde series, which spanned six days, also examined alleged tensions within the Arnault family regarding succession, a topic described as “the poison at the heart of LVMH.” The conglomerate owns a vast portfolio of prestigious brands, including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Tiffany & Co., Moët & Chandon, and Bulgari.

Further aspects of the investigation, which was largely authored by journalists from a publication partially owned by Arnault’s son-in-law, Xavier Niel, touched upon Arnault’s political sway, his media holdings, and past tax inquiries. LVMH’s estimated valuation stands at approximately £105 billion (around $142.4 billion), positioning Arnault as a leading figure on global wealth rankings.

Family and Succession at LVMH

A significant portion of the Le Monde report focused on Arnault’s five children—Delphine, Antoine, Alexandre, Frédéric, and Jean—all of whom hold executive positions within the LVMH group. The investigation suggested that each child has been groomed for a leadership role, potentially creating a competitive environment among the siblings.

According to the report, Arnault allegedly cultivates rivalries among his children, leading to uncertainty among LVMH shareholders about the future leadership transition. It has been previously noted that the family reportedly gathers for a monthly lunch, which Arnault purportedly uses to solicit business advice from each child, with their responses influencing his succession plans.

Arnault’s Response to Allegations

Beyond the comments on employee diversity, Arnault expressed gratitude to the Le Monde journalists for their extensive coverage, including characterizing his family as the “last royal family of France.” He also acknowledged the significant resources dedicated to the investigation.

Arnault countered the portrayal of his family as being in a state of intense rivalry, insisting they are “united” and that the newspaper’s depiction made them appear like characters in an “Italian opera.” He disputed accusations concerning his political influence, family management, and business practices, arguing that many of his methods are standard within large French corporations.

The Hermès Tie Anecdote

The investigation also included an anecdote about a supposed ban on Hermès ties within Arnault’s office, stemming from a past business dispute where LVMH unsuccessfully attempted to acquire the rival luxury brand Hermès in 2010. Journalists claimed that employees or visitors wearing Hermès ties would be discreetly offered an alternative before reaching the elevator.

Arnault clarified this point, stating that ties are not confiscated. Instead, he explained, a more discreet alternative is offered for use within the office premises, framing it as a matter of “manners.” He humorously added, under the condition of secrecy, that he personally owns several Hermès ties.

Arnault concluded his public statement with a lighthearted remark about continuing to solve Le Monde‘s crosswords, which he described as “excellent.” He also shared his initial X post, expressing his gratitude for the supportive messages received following his open letter.

Conclusion

The exchange highlights a unique instance of a major business leader directly addressing critical media coverage, employing a blend of formal response and personal wit. While Le Monde has not issued a further statement, its investigative series remains accessible on its platform, and the discussion initiated by Arnault’s response continues to be a point of interest regarding the inner workings and public image of the LVMH empire.
