A group of young people, aged between 12 and 15, have been accused of a violent assault on Melbourne shopkeeper Van Viet Truong, who later died from his injuries. Shocking details of the alleged attack emerged in children’s court, revealing that Mr. Truong, 60, intervened as a group of youths reportedly attempted to steal from a clothing store. Despite the severity of the allegations, several of the accused have been released back into the community on bail.

Alleged Attack Details Emerge in Court

The incident unfolded on a Saturday afternoon in Sunshine, a western suburb of Melbourne. Van Viet Truong, the owner of Hong Hung Asian Grocers, had reportedly been running his shop with his wife and mother-in-law for over two decades. He was allegedly attacked after attempting to stop a group of youths from stealing from a clothing store located two doors down from his own business.

According to a police prosecutor’s account in children’s court, the alleged incident involved more than just Mr. Truong. The court heard that two 14-year-old girls entered the Diamond Valley Fashion Store with the apparent intention of shoplifting. They were reportedly accompanied by four other youths. As the girls allegedly left the store with stolen items, a 64-year-old male shopkeeper from the clothing store confronted them, demanding they stop.

The prosecutor detailed a struggle that ensued, during which a group of four to five youths allegedly surrounded the 64-year-old man and began punching him repeatedly in the head. Simultaneously, a 54-year-old female colleague from the same store reportedly struggled with one of the girls over a pair of pants.

Mr. Truong’s Intervention and Fatal Assault

Van Viet Truong, known to some as Jimmy, reportedly came to the aid of the assaulted male shopkeeper. The court heard that as Mr. Truong attempted to intervene and stop the group, all the accused allegedly turned their attention to him. A male offender, described as approximately five feet eight inches tall, is accused of dragging Mr. Truong to the ground, causing his head to strike the concrete with a sound described by a witness as ‘cracking’.

The prosecutor stated that the group, comprising both males and females, then repeatedly struck Mr. Truong while he lay on the ground. A witness later reported observing Mr. Truong changing color, appearing unresponsive, and making gurgling sounds from his mouth, indicating severe distress and injury.

Despite pleas from the two clothing store retailers to cease the assault, the attack reportedly continued for several minutes. The court heard that one of the youths eventually shouted, “run, run,” prompting the alleged offenders to flee the scene towards Sunshine Railway Station.

Charges and Bail Decisions

Police arrived shortly after the incident and found Mr. Truong with critical head injuries. Authorities apprehended multiple youths in connection with the assault. Several of the alleged offenders have since been charged with offenses including affray, violent disorder, intentionally causing serious injury, and intentionally causing injury.

A 15-year-old boy faces the most severe charge of manslaughter in addition to the other offenses. A 13-year-old boy initially charged alongside the group has reportedly had his charges withdrawn.

On the Friday of the court appearance, several of the accused were brought before the children’s court. All were released on bail, with the exception of the 15-year-old boy charged with manslaughter. During one bail application, the court heard a request for the proceedings to be held in private due to alleged online harassment directed at a 14-year-old female accused. The magistrate rejected this request but granted bail, citing the applicant’s young age, lack of prior criminal history, and a submitted limited role in the alleged events.

Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation

The death of Van Viet Truong has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns about youth crime and the safety of small business owners. Mr. Truong was remembered as a dedicated shopkeeper who had served the Sunshine area for many years.

The legal proceedings are ongoing, with the court system tasked with determining the facts of the case and ensuring justice for Mr. Truong and the other alleged victims. The release of several young accused on bail underscores the complexities of the juvenile justice system, balancing accountability with the welfare and rehabilitation of minors.

Further court dates are expected as the investigation into the alleged assault and the subsequent death of Van Viet Truong continues. The focus remains on the legal process to address the serious charges brought against the group of young people.
