The incident took place shortly after 10 a.m. local time between the railway stations of Sveti Ivan Zabno and Gradec, approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of the capital city, Zagreb. The Health Ministry confirmed the number of injured, with six individuals sustaining serious injuries and fourteen others reporting minor ones.

Details of the Collision

The passenger train, carrying 27 people at the time of the crash, collided head-on with a freight train. The impact caused severe damage to multiple carriages of the passenger train. Images and videos circulating online depict the extent of the destruction, showing the passenger train’s roof buckled and exterior panels torn away, with its front section bent at a sharp angle. The freight train’s wagons and locomotive were also involved in the wreckage.

The injured were promptly transported to hospitals in Bjelovar and Koprivnica. Some of the more severely injured individuals were later transferred to medical facilities in Zagreb for advanced care. One young woman was admitted to intensive care and reported to be in stable condition.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

Emergency services, including approximately 50 firefighters, were quickly dispatched to the scene. The rescue operation was significantly aided by a local civilian who arrived first with his personal forklift. This civilian’s timely assistance helped clear debris and facilitated easier access for emergency responders to attend to the injured.

Koprivnica-Krizevci County Prefect Tomislav Golubic expressed his deep gratitude to all the emergency personnel and the civilian who provided crucial help. The swift and coordinated response was vital in managing the aftermath of the collision.

Investigation into the Cause

Croatian Railways official Damir Loncaric confirmed that a thorough investigation into the cause of the collision has been launched. Deputy Prime Minister Tomo Medved, who visited the site following the incident, commended the emergency workers for their efficient response. Preliminary information suggests that the crash may have been caused by either a technical malfunction or human error. However, officials emphasized that the final determination rests with the competent investigative authorities.

Unofficial reports, citing sources from HRT, suggested that the freight train may have disregarded a stop signal, leading to the collision with the passenger train. The railway line in the affected area was closed following the accident, causing disruptions to train services.

Context of Recent Rail Incidents

This accident occurred just five days after another serious incident involving a passenger train in Tczew County, northern Poland. In that event, a passenger train struck a trailer carrying hay at a railway crossing. Approximately 500 people were reportedly on board the Polish train at the time. Investigations into the Polish incident indicated that the tractor driver had allegedly ignored warning signals and was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

The Croatian train collision underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring railway safety across different regions. Authorities are committed to a comprehensive investigation to prevent future occurrences and enhance safety protocols on the national rail network.

Conclusion

The collision between the passenger and freight trains near Zagreb serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers in rail transport. The immediate focus was on the rescue and medical care of the injured, followed by a rigorous investigation to ascertain the precise cause. The incident has led to a renewed emphasis on railway safety measures and adherence to operating procedures within Croatia’s rail network.
