A former zookeeper and reality television personality, Lily Tomkinson, has reportedly received a legal threat from Australia Zoo following an interview where she discussed her experiences working at the Irwin family’s wildlife park. Tomkinson, who appeared on Channel Seven’s ‘Farmer Wants a Wife,’ detailed alleged workplace issues, management disagreements, and concerns about animal care practices in an interview with a news outlet. The legal action centers on claims that her statements may have breached a non-disparagement clause in her employment termination agreement.

Zookeeper’s Disillusionment with Australia Zoo

Lily Tomkinson initially viewed her role at Australia Zoo as a dream job, aspiring to build a career at the institution made famous by the late Steve Irwin. However, after approximately two years working at the zoo’s wildlife hospital, her admiration reportedly turned to disillusionment. Tomkinson shared her account of the behind-the-scenes environment, suggesting it contrasted with the zoo’s public image.

Her departure from Australia Zoo in January followed a period of alleged tension with management. Tomkinson claims that her relationship with zoo leadership deteriorated after she began posting videos of herself conducting volunteer wildlife rescues outside of her work hours. While she understood the zoo’s social media policies, which included restrictions on content filmed at work or while in uniform, Tomkinson sought an independent avenue to express her passion for conservation.

She joined a volunteer wildlife-rescue organization, participating in rescues in her own time and documenting them to build an online presence. Tomkinson stated that zoo representatives expressed concerns about this content and asked her to cease publishing certain material, citing its connection to her employment. She recounted feeling dismayed, questioning how she could be asked to stop rescuing animals.

The situation reportedly escalated after Tomkinson returned from filming ‘Farmer Wants a Wife,’ during which she had taken annual leave without disclosing her specific plans. According to her account, further meetings were held concerning her online activities approximately a month after her return.

Concerns Over Animal Releases and Family Involvement

A significant point of contention for Tomkinson involved the procedures for releasing rehabilitated sea turtles and sea snakes from the wildlife hospital. As a specialist in caring for these marine reptiles, she alleged that ordinary hospital staff were generally prohibited from conducting these releases. Tomkinson claimed that a rule, attributed to Terri Irwin, stipulated that only members of the Irwin family could perform such releases.

Furthermore, she suggested that some animal releases were potentially arranged to coincide with the presence of special guests. Tomkinson expressed frustration over this policy, particularly given the sensitive nature of sea snake care, which often requires prompt release once veterinary clearance is obtained. She recalled an instance where staff were eventually permitted to release a sea snake, but only on their day off and after seeking permission to film and post the footage, which later led to her being questioned.

Tomkinson also shared her expectation of greater day-to-day involvement from the famous Irwin family at the hospital, noting that their public and professional commitments meant their appearances were less frequent than she had anticipated. While acknowledging the dedication of the carers and veterinary professionals, she expressed a sense of disappointment, feeling that “so much more could be done.”

Reality TV Experience and Legal Ramifications

Beyond her zoo experience, Tomkinson also reflected on her time on ‘Farmer Wants a Wife.’ She felt that her connection with Farmer Dylan was not fully represented in the broadcast, claiming that complimentary comments he made about her were omitted while similar remarks about other contestants were included. She perceived this as an attempt to portray him as less interested in her.

Tomkinson also found the restrictions placed on contestants, particularly regarding mobile phone access, to be difficult. She recounted an instance where she needed to receive an important medical test result and experienced frustration due to limited communication, eventually threatening to leave the production unless her phone was returned. She described the experience as “suffocating” for her independent nature.

Following her interview, Australia Zoo, through its legal representatives FC Lawyers, reportedly sent Tomkinson a cease-and-desist letter. The letter asserted that her interview may violate a settlement agreement reached in March, which included a clause preventing disparaging remarks about the zoo or its personnel. The agreement reportedly involved a modest employment termination payment from Australia Zoo.

The legal correspondence demanded that Tomkinson stop making further critical comments and retract her statements to the news outlet. Despite the legal threat and the zoo’s significant public relations infrastructure, the decision was made to proceed with publishing her account, given the nature of her comments and the terms of her departure.

Moving Forward: Passion for Wildlife Conservation

Although her employment at Australia Zoo has concluded, Lily Tomkinson remains committed to animal welfare and conservation. She continues to engage in volunteer rescue efforts and aims to leverage her growing social media presence to educate the public about the challenges facing Australian wildlife. Tomkinson expressed optimism about her future, focusing on developing her social media career and pursuing her ultimate goal of wildlife conservation on her own terms.
